Chances of getting in SJSU as CS major?

Local student
GPA: 3.885
SAT: 1400

English - 620
Math - 780

I know SJSU CS is super impacted, but I want to see the chances I have of getting in. I heard SJSU gives preference to local students, but I’m not sure. Please help!

SJSU admits by eligibility index and major. Last years EI threshold for CS was a 4500. This year they have a different EI calculation for Engineering/CS majors and more emphasis on the SAT Math score.

Here is the Calculation so you can see how you compare:

  1. For SAT scores from a test date after March 1, 2016:

[(SAT Math * 3) + (EBRW)]/2 = COE total SAT score

  1. Once you have a total SAT score from step 1 above, put that total SAT score in to the CSU eligibility index equation to calculate the COE impaction index for SJSU:

[SAT Score Total + (GPA * 800)] = COE impaction index

Local students get priority at all CSU’s.

I heard about majors in the college of engineering using a modified eligibility index, but I didn’t know computer science was included. Where does it say that?

CS and SE are both in the College of Engineering so according to this link, they would use the Modified EI.

From the website::::::
Applicants to majors in the College of Engineering(COE) were ranked based on a modified version of the California State University Eligibility Index (COE EI). The California State University EI was modified so that the quantitative (math) section of the SAT was given greater weight than the Evidence Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) section.

I don’t think CS is in the college of engineering. There’s no asterisk next to it.

Here is a list of programs/majors offerred by SJSU in the College of Engineering:

My mistake, SE is in the College of Engineering and not CS. Either way, an EI of 4500 is needed to be competitive.

@Arkitek I think you’re right…looks like CS is in the school of science rather than engineering. If that’s the case, your EI is right at the border for last year. You’re well over last year’s cutoff for software engineering, though, which is in the engineering school, which would actually improve your EI by 80 points. You might want to see if SE would work for you.

They give preference to locals right? I heard they give a 0.2 GPA boost in the EI calculation if you graduate from a high school Santa Clara County.

On the SJSU website for Freshman applicants and impaction::

Preference was given to local applicants who will graduate from a high school in Santa Clara County through a 0.2 GPA increase when we calculated the EI for all majors.
