Chances of Getting In to Cornell

My name is Chris and I'm a rising senior from Long Island, New York and Cornell is my dream school. So what are my chances of getting in? My GPA is a 3.7, my best SAT is a 2060(690 CR, 660 Math, and 710 Writing), my best ACT composite is a 30, and I have a 3, and 3 5's on AP's I've taken. I'm very strong in History and English with 5's APUSH and AP language and 100's on the English, world, and US regents's with SAT II's of 680 on Lit, 710 on US, and 770 on world. However, I'm not very good at math, but am still a year ahead of most students after getting knocked out of the honors curriculum in math after 8th grade. I'm going into calculus this coming year, but my grades on the algebra through trig regents's were never above high 80's. I've also taken honors classes in Spanish and Science(as well as an AP in Environmental Science on which I scored a 5). I have over 200 hours of community service clocked including the school store as a manager, work at a habitat for humanity house and Ronald McDonald house, and an internship for a congressman. I have many extracurricular activities as well, running track and cross country, playing as a 1st chair trumpet and guitar in jazz band and pit band, working as a member of and orator for my schools peer support group, serving as a national honor society member, and serving multiple officer terms in FBLA with a 1st place finish in New York State in impromptu public speaking at the NY FBLA State Leadership Conference, a competitor in the same event at the national level(no 1st place finishes there, but it was the best of the best and I am so happy as 1st in NY!) and a 2nd place finisher in Suffolk county in public speaking 1 and a 3rd place finisher in the county in Business Procedures. I also work at a local tuxedo shop, Tony's Tuxedos, as well as for my dad with his electrical business. I'll also be on campus for a week this summer with the Economics for Leaders program as one of 50 selected for the program (anyone who sees this who'll be at EFL at Cornell let me know!). Finally, I'm applying to the Dyson School of Business at Cornell Early Decision in the fall. I apologize for the laundry list, but I want to be thorough! So please let me know, what are my chances?

You may want to consider Fordham Gabelli, Baruch Zicklin or NYU Stern (if you can afford the latter) as well…

Thank you Catria. Toured NYU and the money isn’t there, nor for Fordham. But, if you don’t mind me asking, what’s lacking? The scores, the GPA, the math issue?

I couldn’t hazard a guess at your chances, but if I were you, I would want higher SAT scores so that those alone do not lesses your chance of admission. Here are the middle 50th % scores for the Ag school for those freshmen who enrolled two years ago. I think it is safe to say that the scores will only have increased since then, although I do not have any documentation to support that.

25th-75th % SAT scores for class entering Fall 2011

CR: 610-710
Math: 620-740

ACT: 28-32 Composite

If you are an otherwise unhooked applicant, I think your scores should be at or above the 75th %, not just somewhere in the middle 50th. Higher scores will not ensure admission, but at least you would then know your scores weren’t the reason you were denied.

I have not seen Dyson SAT scores expressed separately from Ag’s, but can tell you that Dyson had a 10% admit rate last year. Ag had a 16.9% admit rate for males and 18.3% overall for Fall 2012. Again, I do not know that Dyson’s stats are higher but simply that their admit rate is lower.

I am not trying to be discouraging as I have no insight to admissions, but just wanted to point out one area where you might be able to improve your chances before applying ED. Congrats on your Economic Leaders program. I hope that you enjoy your week on campus as it is beautiful during the summer.

Well, your GPA, SAT scores, and EC’s seem to be lacking unfortunately.

Take what I say with a grain of salt though, I am only 16 and a rising senior.

By the way, could you chance me back? I would really appreciate it! ^_^

Thank you CT1417, I appreciate the advice! Planning on taking the SAT’s again in October just before early decision to try and get higher scores.

You have strong extra circulars, but your GPA and SAT are low for Cornell. I would definitely consider it a reach school, but with good recommendation letters and essays, you may have a chance of getting in!

@ravenclaw11 Thank you for your input. I have family friends that are alumni who are all for sending in alumni letters, and I’m in contact with the admissions councilor. I also have my recommendations from teachers lined up, as well as personal relationships with my schools principal and superintendent for administrative recommendations.

No problem man, any time haha and wow, those connections really will help your chances of being admitted greatly! You have a pretty nice advantage on other applicants.

Thanks. My mom works in education now after working on Wall Street so we know some great people! And working hard and getting the school name out there, especially with FBLA and NHS have given me great opportunities with the administration.

Yea thats definitely good to have! Just wondering, where will you be applying to in addition to Cornell?

Going early decision to Cornell, but if that doesn’t work out, ill also be applying to SUNY Binghamton, the Lally School of Management at Renssallear, Boston University, Northeastern, Penn State, and University of Richmond.

The EC’s are good! They look great, but I agree. I think your gpa needs to be pulled up to a solid 4.0. Even though you do have a good sat score, it’s not quite high enough for Cornell. Cornell’s starting is about 2100 or so. I had a friend that got rejected by a 2000 sat score and a 3.9 or so gpa. So I think you should raise the gpa to a 4, and the sat to atleast a 2100. If you’re also looking for other schools in New York, you should also try Colombia and nyu!! These schools are all great!!

Your chances of being accepted to SUNY Binghamton, Northeastern, Boston, Penn State, and Richmond are pretty good! Like nerdygirl999 said, you should definitely look into NYU! Your statistics are similar to many accepted students at NYU and it’s also a top ranked school that’s located in New York.

The OP said that NYU Stern was unaffordable. BU and Smeal would be almost as unaffordable too.

RPI Lally: Low match
Binghamton: Low match
U Richmond: Match
NEU: Match/High match
BU: Match
PSU Smeal: Low match/Match
