Chances of getting in to CSULB or SDSU?

hey! I struggled my sophomore year and passed with C's/B's. I moved to 3 different schools and that really affected me. Jr year I have 3 AP classes and am only taking Geometry because I really struggle with math, is it going to ruin my chances if I excel in all other subjects but struggle in Math and sometimes Sciences? I am going to Major in Journalism or Mass Communications. Please leave me any feedback!!! Thank you!!

What’s your weighted GPA so far?

Plus SDSU and CSULB are very impacted and 70,000+ applicants apply there each year, so it’s increasingly harder to go into those schools.

I got accepted into SDSU and I’m currently waiting on CSULB.

Here are my stats from frosh and junior year so you can see what you might want to aim for:

GPA weighted: 3.71 CSU GPA: 3.5
SAT: 1440
ACT: 21

I only took 1 honors class in my junior year and that was Physics. In my senior year I also took only 1 honors class (Biology 2) and I didn’t take any home periods (so I had a full schedule). And the highest math class I ever took in high school is Trigonometry.

My current GPA would be around 3.5-3.7.
I have not yet taken the SAT Tests but plan on taking it at least twice. I am in AVID and all the leadership classes also. I have herd that if I excel in one or more subject area then it is okay to have one struggling stage. (My math) Do you know if these colleges look at your personal statement essay and stuff like that?? Thank you!

If you live outside the local area, it will be harder to get in. Those 2 schools are the most impacted in the CSU system. You have a strong gpa, get a good SAT score and apply broadly to more than the 2 CSU’s and you should get in somewhere.

@Harmbreezy

I know a girl with less than stellar test scores that got in with a 3.6.

I also took AVID for frosh, junior, and senior year! And I’m outside the local area.

CSU’s do not look at personal statements or volunteer hours, only UC’s do that.

I always had A’s and B’s in math and english. And 1 “C” in Geometry.

But with my SAT’s I did better on reading than math. I scored in the mid 400’s for my math and had a 550 for reading.

And you will also have to take the ELM/EPT, these are placement test, but you can be exempt from these test. To see how to get exempt you can click this link here: [EPT and ELM Exemptions | Student Academic Support | CSU](http://www.calstate.edu/sas/ept-elm-exemptions.shtml)

So I strongly advise you to do what ever you can to be exempt from these test, because if you fail the test you will have to take remedial classes, which you will have to pay for, and they don’t count for college credit.

But remember SDSU is not easy to get into, so if this is your dream school you should have plenty of back ups. Even with my stats I got wait listed from UCR -_-

@lookin4ward I am currently in Murrieta, just barley outside of San Diego… Is that too far away??

@Gunner4Life so if they dont look at personal statements, then they strictly look at gpa and test score? That’s dumb! haha but thank you! Good to know! What about letters of recommendation?

@Harmbreezy

CSU’s and UC’s alike do not request letter of recommendations. And yes, CSU’s just looks at GPA, rigor of class schedule and test scores. But what’s great about CSU’s is that if you took your SAT’s twice and you scored higher on math the second time then they will use your highest score to determine your admissions. And the same goes for reading and so forth.

And I just got accepted to CSULB today! But I was rejected at first but I qualified for their BEACH Pathway Program admission application. In BEACH PP, you have to write three essays, and I wrote very good essays.

So if you ever happen to get rejected to CSULB, but they offered you the BEACH PP, then feel free to ask me any questions regarding the essay questions. But let’s hope that you get accepted in one try :).

I got accepted to both SDSU and CSULB.
CSU GPA: 3.85
UW GPA: 3.5
SAT: 1140/1600

Your GPA should be good right now, so try to keep it up. Study for the SATs and aim for a +1100/1600. I know people who had +1250 on their SAT and got denied, so I’d focus on keeping your grades up and try to take AP classes to make your transcript shine.

It really depends on the major that you are transferring into. SDSU doesn’t break down admissions stats based on major so it is hard to tell what is super impacted compared to just impacted.

@Jopoy456

AP actually doesn’t matter as much as you think. I only took one honors class in my junior year and one honors class in my senior year and still got accepted into SDSU. My major is Biology and all the honors classes that I took was related to science.

So my recommendation is to take at least one honors class for your junior and senior year. Or take at least one honors class that relates to your major. But taking a lot of AP classes won’t hurt either.

But overall, good test scores and a high GPA is more important.

Is the nursing major hard to get into at SDSU?

I got in with a 3.1 GPA and a 24 ACT, which is obviously much less than they desire. Anything is possible, but location and major will influence you admission decision. I was OOS and I was majoring in English. I took AP English courses and always did fine in that course, so I assume that it affected my admission. If I was going to major in something like Computer Science, which focuses heavily on math and science, which I got a C’s in, than I am sure the outcome would have been different.
