Chances of getting in?

I have a 3.9 weighted GPA and I got a 27 on the ACT. I'm not exactly sure about my unweighted GPA but I'm sure it's around 3.7 and I'm taking the ACT again in December.

I have quite a few extra curriculars like National Honors Society (Officer), yearbook (editor), quizbowl, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, PALS, and volleyball. I've been on the Honor Roll all four years and have gotten perfect attendence for two.

I listed my preferred major as Chemistry which I'm worried about because my AP Chem grades were B's and C's throughout the year and possibly they will not think I am good enough to succeed as a chemistry major. I really only listed Chemistry because I'm not really sure if I would want to go into biochem or some other science related major (or minor) and chemistry seemed broad enough (I want to ultimately go to optometry school).

You’re fine. Your major has no weight on whether or not you get in.

Ok thank you! That is so good to know. I’ve kind of been freaking out and regretting that I put that on my application! So do you think I will have a good chance at getting in? Also, does having a letter of recommendation make a large effect on the admission decision?

Relax, you will get in. My d was admitted with a 3.4 and a 25 ACT.

In state or out of state seem to have very different outcomes this year according to other posters…

I’m in-state. Is that a good thing or bad thing?

There have been some students elsewhere on CC that claim to have been deferred with fairly decent stats in-state. Just saying…

Instate or OOS wouldn’t make a difference in this case. The OP is definitely in.

OP, have you checked out Lyman Briggs?

@rodney- At least on here, the only person who has been deferred had a GPA in the bottom 25%. The OP’s stats are in the top 25% (GPA) and towards the upper middle 50% (ACT). Unless you’re referring to people outside the MSU forum.

I have an I would absolutely love to attend! I have a friend who went through it and he said he got one of the best educations there and it prepared him extremely well for med-school and I know it would do the same for me with optometry school.

Good! Then I suggest applying ASAP (assuming you’re a senior) as Lyman Briggs fills up pretty quickly :).

^^roman: my comments are based on, yes, that post, and anecdotal evidence from that particular poster that he also knew classmates with higher stats who had been deferred…

And the fact that I know at least three students with much lower stats from NJ who have already been accepted during this cycle, and others with even lower stats from last year who are attending…

I already sent in my application for the school as a whole. Do I have to send in another specifically for Lyman Briggs?

@Rodney
Why would it make a difference? Just the fact that it would mean more money or more diversity?

srs- I’m pretty sure that you have to indicate your major on your application.

I think you can call admissions now and ask them to change it but I’m not positive.

Alright, I’ll be sure to call. You have been such a help! :)

Best of luck :).
