My SAT score was 1730 (530 reading, 610 math, 560 writing).

GPA: 4.0 (weighted: about 4.7)

I'm an honors student who does plenty of extracurricular activities. My only worry is my SAT score. I want to double major in Psychology and Voice Performance. Do I have a good shot to be accepted? I'm a junior now.

Look at the decisions thread for class of 2017. People are getting in with a 1570, 1590, 1650 SAT. So, you should get in with no problem. Just apply before November 30.

I think you have a good shot of getting in. You still have plenty of time to raise your scores but a 1730 is good. Have you tried taking the ACT some people say its easier, i got a 1600 on the SAT but a 28 on the ACT which is ~1850 on the SAT.

This year was a weak applicant pool, since our class was exposed to the Sandusky stuff a lot it probably scared a lot of people off. Look for it to go back up next year. I think you’re good though, PSU has always valued GPA > SAT scores

I know 3 people (personally) that didn’t apply because of the scandal although that might not tell the whole story. College admission should be getting competitive every year but the opposite is happening to PSU…
Who’s to say they won’t get weak applicants next year ? I think PSU is going down.

I will be attending Penn State this fall anyway…because I have no choice…PSU is better than most public colleges in PA except Pitt which is on the same level but it doesn’t offer aerospace…

The 2013 class at our school, any many in the area, is much smaller than average, and the class of 2012 was much larger. Last year’s apps to PSU were up, this year’s are down. Need to consider the size of the pool.

Our 2013 class is 19% smaller than the class of 2012.

a lot of jumping to conclusions here without facts. It will be interesting to see the “yield” and average stats. You see, those making up the ~10-15% drop in applications might not be in the “seriously considering PSU category”. These may be the people in the “just added PSU to the list” category. There is always a certain fraction of applicants in this category and the yield on these people tend to be low. This is the category of applicant that is more volatile (swings up and down based on the economy, demographics etc)

PS. keep in mind people posting on sites like these are concerned they might not get in. So the success stories of people with credentials in the lower 25% are brought into light.

I was surprised that Penn State’s number of applicants decreased this year. Pitt’s number of applicants increased significantly, probably due to this issue. But I think it is a passing thing. Penn State’s reputation is too good to suffer long term damages.

May I know what is the issue you guys are referring to? (Maybe a link?)
Sorry, but since I am an International Student I do not know what it is about.
Also, I am planning to attend PSU :D

P.S From where do you guys get the above stats of the number of students applying have decreased?

“Though it’s still early, 2013 applications for undergraduate admission to Penn State were lagging significantly behind when compared to prior years as November 2012. While Penn State is still projecting an applicant pool of 70,000, that total would be almost 13 percent below the previous year.”
