Chances of getting in?

I'm a junior planning to apply to FSU for the fall 2014 term. I'm Hispanic and I live in Miami.

SAT: 1970 (720 Math, 630 Reading, 620 Writing) I'm not sure if I want to retake it.

SAT IIs: Taking Math 1 and Chemistry in June.

Weighted GPA: 4.7
Unweighted GPA: 3.7

I've taken 2 years of Italian, and took AP biology last year and got a 5.

I am currently taking AP Chemistry, AP English, Dual Enrollment American History, and Honors physics.

Taking AP English Literature, AP Physics B, AP calculus AB, AP Government/Economics, and Dual Enrollment English next year.

ECs:
Beta Honor Society, National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, AWARE (environmental club)

Student Government 1st VP

I've volunteered at a church, playing music, for 3 years.

My intended major is between physics or chemistry.

I would say your well above the safe zone, meaning unless you have some criminal record or something else to make them not want you, your in. You should always take the SAT or ACT atleast twice because you never know what higher score you could potentially get. A higher score can lead to more scholarships and honors programs.

I’m also from Miami, what school are you in? (if you don’t mind me asking)

You’re a shoe in.

What’s your FSU recalculated GPA? Your unweighted and your weighted GPA also don’t correlate. They suggest that you’ve taken only AP/DE/IB classes, which I’m going to guess isn’t likely.

Aside from that, you’ve got a pretty good shot at getting in. If you’re looking at majoring in physics or chemistry, I think it would be a good idea for you to take the ACT, since it also tests science in addition to reading and math.

@jrr24601 I’m in Miami Senior High

@Pasbal How do I recalculate my GPA? And how don’t they correlate? That’s what it is.

Toss out all non-academic classes, so get rid of PE, Band, Art, etc. Keep the science, math, etc classes.

Weight each semester grade to FSU’s scales. Each AP/IB/Dual Enrollment class gets a full point extra (so an A=5, B=4, etc), and Honors/Pre-IB get an extra half a point (A=4.5, B=3.5, etc).

Add up how many points you have, and divide by the total number of grades.

There used to be a website that had a convenient worksheet where you could basically calculate it out really easily, but it looks like it no longer works sadly.

You can do a lot better than FSU, just saying

Not in Florida. FSU is excellent for physics and chemistry. FSU hosts the only National Laboratory in Florida - the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Georgia Tech doesn’t have one, btw.

I think you should retake the SAT and aim for 2000+. It could mean the difference of being offered a scholarship, or not.
