Chances of Getting In

Hi guys!

As you can probably guess, I really want to get into Columbia. I'm asian and I go to a very competitive school in NJ. I know someone who really wants to go as well, and he has an extremely good shot at Columbia. He's half white, half asian, both his dad and his uncle went to Columbia, and he's really smart. However, his GPA was slightly lower than mine. He has a couple of EC's (specifically band stuff), but I have a significant more amount that are much more diverse. I don't know how much he volunteers, but I have a solid, albeit not a lot, of hours. He doesn't have any leadership positions, but I'm sure that he will probably want to be an officer in marching band. I have a few small ones, but I am cofounder of a club and also working to start another one. We're both sophomores so standardized testing isn't in play yet.

My question is, if we both apply for Columbia ED, what are the chances that we will both get in? I understand that of course there will be others who apply, but between the two of us, who has a better chance? I'm guessing that it is him, but I would like to hear some opinions of others.

Thanks!

Thanks for the answer @larkings! Yea that’s basically what I thought too. Not many people get into Columbia from our school (2 got in this year. One was African American; the other was Asian). One thing I forgot to mention was that I got accepted into a program for Columbia last summer. Idk how much that would help me though.

General studies is for non-traditional students. It’s average age is 28. It is rare that someone can get into GS directly from high school.

Not certain GS has ED.

Don’t you mean Columbia College and not GS?

GS does have ED.

Oops, yeah I meant the undergraduate program.
