Okay so I posted this in another thread but I feel like it will disappear by tomorrow so I'll just post it again here hoping someone will answer lol

I'm currently attending a community college in Mass and I plan to stay here for a year. My hs gpa was like a 3.0 or something in that area (I did horribly freshman year). my SAT score was pretty low too (450 CR, 520 Math, superscore 1480). I took one honors and AP class, and I did some clubs and community service. I'm getting all A's and one B in my college courses right now so I believe I would have around a 3.8/3.9 by the end of this semester. Assuming I have a stellar essay, what are my chances? Intended Major: Comp Sci

Also my brother went to UMass aswell if that means anything.
Thanks in advance

Hey there. I went to advising yesterday and there was a transfer student there that was getting help. If you are transferring into Umass, it will take at least 3 years to finish your degree if you have all your gen eds complete. If you do not, it will take another 4 years. There are lots of required computer science classes you need to take and there aren’t really any classes you can test out of or use community college credit for. Here’s the tracking form for computer science students

https://www.cs.umass.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/Academics/BS-CMPSCI-tracking.pptx_.pdf

Also note that getting into the computer science major is pretty tricky. If you do not have any calc credit then you will probably not get in and will instead be put on contract. Even with calc you still might be put on contract to see how well you do in the intro classes. Do well- you’re in the major. Do bad- you’re gonna have to reapply to the major and complete another contract. Do something like fail the intro course (121) and you’re pretty much out of the major.

Im telling you this now because lots of people try for the computer science major, many people fail, many get disappointing. Community college students find themselves with 5 years of college instead of 4 because the cs major is so brutal. Is this something you’re okay with? Are you also okay with not being a computer science major? I got accepted to the major as a freshman and am doing well in all my intro classes so far- however my friend who was a cs major dropped it after the intro class because it was too hard for him. The major isn’t for everyone- is it really what you want to do?

You will most likely get accepted to the school. Getting accepted into the computer science major is tricky. I can answer any questions you might have. Good luck.

@penguinz03 Hey thanks for replying! I am taking a CS elective right now & next semester I will be taking Calc I & intro to CS. If I do well in those do you think I will be accepted right into the major? I am willing to work very hard to get my grades and I know slacking off isn’t an option. Tbh, I really don’t mind having to stay longer than usual, I am in no rush.

Also, my friend is in the same boat as me except her HS gpa was a 2.5. Do you think she will at least get accepted into the school?

Thanks again for the informative answer.

If you do well in them your chances of being accepted into the major increase significantly- Im obviously not an official admissions rep so I can’t say for certain. If the intro to CS class is java based maybe find out if the credit for it can transfer to Umass for CS121, though Umass is extremely bad with credit transfers. I have a friend taking Intro to chem for the 2nd time because it wouldn’t transfer from Ohio State. If you don’t mind staying longer than usual then its not a problem, but it obviously would be nice to not have to take a repetitive intro class again.

I believe the min gpa for a transfer applicant to Umass is a 2.7

http://www.umass.edu/admissions/apply/admissions-requirements/transfer-admissions-requirements

So as long as she has a 2.7 gpa at her community college she should at least have a chance. They do look at SAT scores though, so if those are also low she may be out of luck.

@penguinz03 Okay. Thanks so much!
