I would say that your chances as an OOS applicant are pretty low. While your grades are good, your low SAT scores are a hindrance; and I don’t know that being a 1st-generation to attend college is enough to overcome the low SAT scores. Nothing about your ECs jumps out, either.
Of course, only the admissions office knows for sure; but I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
Hey, I’m Nepalese too! Anyways, being from VA, you have a huge disadvantage. OOS students that apply to UNC have similar qualifications as applicants from top schools. Your SAT is too low for OOS (good for instate). UNC likes volunteering and community service so your EC’s are good. The only negatives are your SAT and class rank. UNC might be a low reach/ high match. Be hopeful b/c you have a chance. Did you apply EA?(that will help)
Hey everyone, I don’t like to do chance me things (also sorry if I am intruding on this thread haha) but I am very stressed about my chances of getting into UNC. It is one of my top schools and I am so nervous
I am Out of State
Objective:
SAT I (breakdown):N/a
ACT: 31
SAT II:n/a
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): n/a
Weighted GPA: 4.19
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): my HS does not rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP US History (4), AP Biology (4), senior year I haven’t taken the tests yet but I am taking AP Calculus AB, AP Physics and AP Us Gov/Politics ((my school only offers APs as an upperclassman)
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: 3 AP courses, a few honors, a few regular,- overall 8 classes that aren’t too easy (I didn’t make my senior year easy)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): College Book Award, Varsity in two sports, Regional Cheerleading award
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Key Club (President), Campus Ministry (senior leader), Latin, Science and Regular National Honors Society, Cheerleading 4 years, track and field 4 years, piano
Job/Work Experience: internship at lab in the Yale Medical School
Volunteer/Community service: camp counselor for three years, mission trip before junior year, I also regularly organize service projects in campus ministry
Summer Activities: internship as mentioned above, camp counselor as mentioned above
Essays: I’m comfortable with both of my essays that I have written- one was about learning how to ride a bike, and my UNC one was the TedTalk one that I absolutely loved
Teacher Recommendation: Math teacher (excellent writer), science teacher I have had since freshman year who helped me get my internship,
Counselor Rec:I assume it is good
Additional Rec:PI (lab director) that I worked with at Yale wrote me a letter (I didn’t read it)
State: Connecticut (out-of-state)
School Type: Private, small catholic
Ethnicity: white–I didn’t indicate this on my application
Gender: female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none that I can think of
Thank you so much everyone, I am not one to tell everyone about my grades and stuff but I just need some reassurance that I might have a chance. also- I am applying for a major in Public Health if that makes a difference
@trackcheer2016: If our school’s Naviance is any guide, your ACT and GPA are a little on the low side; so based on that I would say your chances are not the best. Of course, admissions is not just a matter of GPA and test scores; only the admissions office knows for sure, and if you applied EA, your question should be answered in about two weeks.
@bksoccer7 Even for in state these SAT scores are not “good.” In state acceptances probably have 600+ across the board, or if they do have a score below 600, they probably have another exceptionally high score (750+)
@bksoccer7 I’m sure students get in with those scores in state, but they would definitely be in the bottom 25% (for in state not counting OOS). That means they would need something stellar/have a hook. High 500s just don’t cut it, even for in state. High 500s would typically be matches for NC State.
Hi I would say that u have a TON of leadership positions. I think it’s obvious that your only hindrance is the test score. I just knew i got in as an international student so don’t lose hope I have better test scores but fewer leadership positions
