Do you know what my chances would be of being accepted to Boston University? I really want to get in, but it’s a reach school for me.
GPA unweighted: 3.0
GPA weighted: 3.1 (I didn’t take much Honors or AP classes freshman and sophomore year).
SAT Scores: 1400 … (trying to improve this into at least a 1700).
Current classes:
AP Psychology
AP Spanish Heritage
Honors Physics
Honors English
Calculus 1
I’ve taken four years of Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and Language.
SOME of the Extracurricular Activities I’ve been a part of:
I have been a community service club for two years
I have been a part of a college readiness program for two years
Key Club for a year
Track and field for a year
** How would my chances to get into the university be if I were to achieve at least a 1700 in the SATs?**
*** What would my chances be if I were to achieve 1900 on the SATs?***
Google the common dataset and check section C11. This will show the range of GPA’s of enrolled students along with the 25th and 75th percentile for test scores. It is easy enough to chance yourself. If you are below the 25th percentile then your chances are slim, above the 75th percentile and your chances are good.
Your GPA need to be higher for BU, and beef up your SAT/ACT stats. I won’t say it’s impossible but its a reach. Do well in all your AP classes and your GPA will be at an acceptable range. I would also suggest applying to some csus. People have this notion that if your not at a big name University, that you won’t get a quality education. That is a flat out myth. Keep your options open, what you make of your education depends on the motivation of the student, not the “big name university.” No one cares if you went to Harvard or Stanford etc… All potential employers care about is if you learned something, and if you can apply it. The only people who care if you went to a prestigious school is those who think they are better than everyone. In college, you are no longer the smartest one in your class like in high school. It’s a whole diffrent ball game. Good luck…
I would say right now its an absolute major reach given your scores and GPA. If you get a 1700 still a reach but theres like a 5% chance you could get in. With 1900 still a reach due to low GPA. A school like BU would’ve liked to see at least honors classes as a freshman and sophomore. Also unless you’ve got some really great ECs you didnt list those are a weak spot too. Those ECs you listed are things many kids with more competitive scores do in addition to other ECs. Overall i’d say its very unlikely you get in Best of luck though
@LadyRaven, I don’t think the OP is from California.
Applying to California public, tax-payer-funded, universities, like the CSU’s, with low stats and non-residency does not bode well for her. Priority for admissions goes to local residents, then California State residents. OOS students pay a hefty price tag with no financial aid available.
