Chances of getting in

Hi all,

I am an International student, currently studying 12th Grade in the United Arab Emirates in a school which follows Indian curriculum CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).

I want to do Aeronautical Engineering for my Bachelors degree.

I just wanted to know what my chances are in getting admission into UMich, Ann Arbor, UVA, UIUC, University of Maryland, Georgia Tech, Penn State and University of Notre Dame.

I dont have GPA grading in my school. The grading is purely based on marks obtained:
9th - 85%
10th - 90%
11th - 80%

I had also recieved a half-fee scholarship in grade 11.

ACTIVITIES :
I have been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders’ Conference (GYLC) in Washington/New York this year.
Swimming
Singing
Made Robot for science exhibition
Created a presentation on the periodic table
Helped the team in coming 3rd in an inter-school robot competition
Part of the school Anti-Smoking Committee
I have been learning Indian Carnatic Music vocal for over 10 years and have give a 2 and half hour concert. I have also been learning Carnatic Music violin for over 3 years.

SAT SCORES:
MATH - 700
CR - 600
WR - 600
Planning to give it again to improve my score.

Going to give SAT II's in November. Will get above 750 in maths, physics and chemistry.

Want to do a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

Teacher Recommendations will be really good. Not sure what the school counsellor will write (but got info from previous school mates in US universities that we usually get really good recs).

Am going to start working on the essays when the apps are released and HOPEFULLY they should be good.

I am planning to do either MBA or Law after undergraduation. Is UVA good for law.

Will appreciate all responses. good as well as bad.

Thanks all.

Seeing as how it's hard for international students, I can see that you really need to work on your SAT. Your marks are all right, but without a rank we can't be sure how high you are in your class. Also UVA does not have an Aeronautical Engineering program, just Aerospace. Aerospace may be too broad but you will get the skills needed for Aeronautical. Don't wait on your essays! UVA's essay are all ready up. http://www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/essays.html You have a chance but it may not be a really good one.

Admission to UVA for international students is tough, particularly from countries like India and China. Your scores don't particularly stand out and your grades are meaningless out of context. How do you compare to your classmates? Where do people with your grades typically go to college?

UVA has a very good law school (top 10), but applying there is separate from applying to UVA as an undergraduate. The earliest you would apply is your fourth year. Law schools - particularly competitive ones like UVA's - require very strong verbal skills and a strong command of english - something you clearly need to work on. Being an engineering major as an undergraduate won't do you any favors, either, unless you want to sit for the patent bar.

I have seen guys with the same stats as mine for 9th, 10th and 11th get into universities like Georgia Tech, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, etc......I am easily in the top 10% of my class. My school gives grades but we are not ranked according to them.

Just for stats I had got all A's in my 9th and 10th subjects.....and have got a few A's and B's in my 11th. i am currently doing 12th so i dont have any data on that.

Since you are in the top 10% and with the other stats, you have an ok chance, but retaking the SATs will only help you.

How much would be an appropriate score in the SAT's for an international.

Also,
If my school were to give GPA's then it would be as follows:-
9th - 3.7+ (coz i got A's in all my subjects)
10th - 3.7+ (coz i got A's in all my subjects)
11th - 3.2 - 3.4 (coz i got a few A's and a few B's)

Would be happy if you could give your opinion.
