Chances of getting into a good college?

Hello Everyone

One question that has been bothering me for a while now is how do colleges respond to low GPA and high SAT score. I am an International student and i have scored 2300 on the SAT but i have a low percentage(around 3.2-3.4 GPA, according to some websites). I had played Kick Boxing(National Level) in my country, I have around 150 hours of credits in computer science(don't really know if it matters), I had worked in a NGO for around 3-4 months. Do I have any chance of getting into Ivy League, If not, what is the best college i can go for (USA) considering the fact that i want to pursue BS in Computer Science.

There’s an active International students’ forum here. Most important question: what can you afford?

I can probably afford around 60-70 % of the cost.

The ivies that are generous with Fin Aid to internationals also have the most rigorous standards for admission. Thus you need to focus on a set of colleges where you can basically expect no financial aid but can cover 100% of the cost.

Also, you should focus on schools with known high caliber CS departments. Few Ivies fit this criteria

Well, my main concern is whether I will be admitted into any of the ivy league colleges with my GPA.My dream university is Cornell, and from what i have heard they fulfill the needs of every suitable candidate(Money is not my main concern) and can you please suggest some colleges that fits the category you described above

Thanks

Maybe post here?

I just want to know whether I am eligible for Cornell University or not?

You won’t get into Cornell with that GPA.

You need to aim lower than Ivies or MIT with your GPA as an international student even with your SAT score.

Consider RPI, UMD-CP, Wooster PT or Lehigh which all have good CS departments.

What about UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON,UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-SANTA BARBARA,PENN STATE UNIVERSITY,University of Illinois—Urbana-Champaign and California Institute of Technology :frowning:

You say “money is not my main concern” but you could only pay 60-70% of an Ivy’s tuition. This is about the same cost you’d pay to UW, UCSB, UIUC or Caltech. I don’t know how you overcome the shortfall in money. These schools will not give you much if any financial aid. BTW, Caltech is not realistic for you whatsoever.

Cost will be an issue if you can’t pay for most/all costs.

Your GPA is too low for the schools that give need-based aid to int’ls.

You need to readjust your thinking. Top schools will not admit you.

How much will your parents pay? $35k per year? more?? less? WHAT??

My parents could arrange around 40-50k per year. Could you please tell me some colleges that I might have a shot at.Secondly could you please tell he how to convert percentage into GPA(I am not sure about the GPA that I calculated).

Cornell does not promise to meet need of internationals. Please do not try to convert your grades to the American system. All that matters is whether or not you are considered by your teachers to be somewhere between good and exceptional student in your school.

Thank you  @International95 @mom2collegekids @T26E4

You asked for colleges where you might have a shot. I listed these earlier.

Consider RPI, UMD-CP, Wooster PT or Lehigh which all have good CS departments.

^Do you mean Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)? Not to be confused with College of Wooster, also a very good school but not what this student is looking for.

Yes WPI was what I meant.

@SSID8055 I currently attend the University of Washington and it is ranked among the top universities (for your intended major). Tuition here is around $33648 for international students for 3 quarters. You are also required to have a health insurance which is listed as $1135 per year. Room & Board on campus is estimated to be $10833…

If you decide to register for all 4 quarters (Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer), then the total would be $15000 greater.

In terms of admission, you need to be admitted through the university first. Here are the admissions statistics for Autumn 2013:

Average GPA of admitted international freshman applicants-- 3.80 on a 4.00 scale
Average test scores of admitted int’l freshman applicants-- TOEFL (100) SAT CR (552) SAT M (737) SAT W (606)
Applied vs. Accepted: 7395: 2984

You are also required to have fulfilled the CADR (usually completed in high school)
Composition/Lit (4 years)
Mathematics (3 years)
Social Science (3 years)
Lab Science (2 years)
World Languages (2 years)
The Arts (0.5 year)

You then need to prove English Proficiency through TOEFL or IELTS. Your SAT scores may satisfy this requirement only if you received good grades in high school English/Lit courses AND if English was the primary language of instruction.

Once your admitted, you apply to the major (after fulfilling the prerequisites). While I can’t guarantee your admission, I think it is still worth a try.

The estimated tuition may also increase if you take online courses or courses with labs (online: ~$350 per course/ lab fee varies).

@husky1212‌: My relative is also pursuing MS for WU (Can he help me)(Alumni), and if I manage to score more than 100 on the TOEFL will my GPA be overlooked.
