I'm going to be a Freshman at Alabama this Fall and am going to go through rush. I was just wondering what my chances were of getting into a sorority. I graduated with a 4.27 gpa. I didn't have many leadership positions but I was Volleyball Captain and helped start a recycling program at school. I volunteered at several places and had a decent amount of extra curriculars. I have a job that I have been at for almost a year. I am not a legacy anywhere because I am the first in my family to go greek. I don't really know a lot of people currently in sororities but I was able to get at least one rec to each house.

Okay, so based on what happened when I went during rush and what my friends who are currently in sororities have said, the system REALLY does work. You will get into the sorority you should be in! Please do go in with an open mind as well because it really only leads to bad things. As long as you are presenting yourself in the best matter then you will be in the sorority that you should be in.

Have an open mind and don’t put yourself above any. Know why you want to join a sorority and what it will mean to you to become a member of one IF you do make it. All sororities have something to offer and all are unique in what there principles are. Id advice reading all that you can on each sorority, i.e. date founded, history, motto, principles, badge, colors, statement, philanthropy, etc. The UA has a good amount of Sororities so there is a lot to choose from, read up on them. Do note that while each sorority has something to offer, realize that chapters differ at every school, so for example you may read up on sorority B and find out you love it to death and what they stand for how they were founded, what they have done etc, but turns out Sorority “B” at your school does not feel right and you could not see yourself happy there in the long term.

You would then have to make a decision, there would be nothing wrong with choosing sorority (B), if you wish to be apart of them and truly love what they stand for (remember sorority is a life commitment and you have sisters everywhere). However you may want to look at other options. Say sorority (A) has principles you like a lot (not your favorite) but you get along really well with the girls, that may be a better option.

Also many girls define “good” sorority differently. Sorority (C) may be have the best looking girls be the wealthiest/most involved/most popular and deemed “the best” house. However, sorority (C) might have poor sisterhood. What I mean by that is, its not uncommon for top houses to be extremely divided from within with there being nothing but cliques. In addition the exclusion of some sisters from within causes them to often form their own cliques, it can get out of hand, and what you can essentially have is a bunch of sisters who (yes do things together for the chapter) but aren’t close at all.

Some girls are okay with ^ above, while others are not and would chose a “lesser” sorority with a strong sisterhood with little to no cliques. A good sorority to one girl might mean the best sisterhood while to another it means most popular and considered top house.

All depends on what you want and how you want your years to be.
