Chances of getting into a highly selective school

I've had my heart set on going to a top school for as long as I can remember, and most of people with whom I've discussed college see it as a legitimate possibility. Past my parents though, I haven't heard a very insightful opinion, so I'm interested in hearing other opinions on both my chances and what I can do to improve those chances.

Just to give a background, I'm a freshman in high school who is planning on going into the medical field. My college research thus far has been limited to what I've read on this website and a few hours of looking at the websites of the colleges themselves. Currently, my top picks are Penn and Georgetown.

My weighted GPA is 4.36, and my non-weighted GPA is 4.24.

I'm currently seventh in my class out of 261.

I'm taking all of the advanced courses available. We're starting to schedule for next year, and I once again selected the most challenging classes that I could. I'm able to handle my current workload with ease.

I was on my school's varsity golf team this past year and am planning on playing for the rest of high school.

I'm a very active member of my school's community service club.

I also volunteer with several organizations outside of school.

I'm an active member of my class council.

I'm a public forum debater.

I'm working with an eighth grade teacher to tutor Algebra I students.

A few months ago, I received my Silver Award in Girl Scouting. (For those of you who don't know, the Silver Award is given to Girl Scouts who complete a fifty-hour service project. It is second only to the Gold Award in terms of prestige.) I'm beginning the prerequisites for the Gold Award, which I can begin when I turn fifteen in a few months.

I've recently begun working with some of my friends to promote political involvement among young people via social networking.

Though it wasn't in high school, I was among the teacher-selected American Legion Award nominees last year.

Any commentary is much appreciated. Thank you!

What’s your UW GPA out of?

@immasenior, it’s out of 4.36.

I’ve never heard of an UW GPA out of 4.36.

Regardless, you could probably get into an excellent school, obviously depending on the rest of you HS career. Don’t get your heart set on a particular school, though. That’s a good way to get unnecessarily disappointed. There are most likely hundreds of schools you could be happy at and receive an excellent education. Keep that in mind.

Your gpa and class rank is good. Your ecs are also. You also do not mention any standardized test scores. Assuming good scores you have a good chance at a highly selective school. You could make it in one of the “lower” ivies.
