Hey, so I'm currently a junior in high school. My goal is to get into a UC school, but due to a lot of hardships and my own laziness, I really messed up big time in my sophomore year. I received 3 D's in the second semester (my school follows a year-round schedule). Yes I know that you're thinking it's impossible for me and I'll be lucky to get into any college with these kind of grades, but I thought of a plan to improve my chances.

In response, I worked out a plan with my family and my counselor how to better my chances. First is to get straight A's in junior year to raise my overall GPA and prove to colleges I can do it if I try. Second is to ace the SATS and be one of the top-ranking test taker in the district. And third, I'll have to re-take 2 of my classes I got a D in during junior second semester and bring it up to an A. So far, my grades are pretty good, all A's so far and 4 weeks in, and I've studied for SAT's the whole summer break, and will continue studying. I was hoping if I can accomplish all this, It might even be possible to get into a decent UC school. There's still one problem.

I only have room for 2 classes, and I received 3 D's. I can only make up 2 before the end of junior year, and one D will still remain. Let's assume I did everything in my plan, the only problem now would be that one D. Will colleges (or UC's to be more specific) care about that 1 D? Is it possible to get in with one D?

SUMMING IT ALL UP:
Q1: Will I be able to get into UC with 1 D in sophomore year, but did really well on SAT's as well as getting straight A's in junior year?
Q2: Is there a good chance I can get into UC school if I did all the things I plan to do during the junior year (read second paragraph).

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and all answers are appreciated.

You have a great plan and your determination and hard work will serve you well. You can almost certainly get into a UC if you consider a year or two at CC as an option. I don’t know how much they weight one bad grade, hopefully you would get in on your overall GPA, but CC is a backup plan. Just remember, your diploma will not mention that you started somewhere else, just where you finished.

My freshman year was a mix of A’s, b’s, and one c, sophomore…well yeah 3 D’s, the others is 2 B’s and an A. Even if I did get straight A’s + honors/ap classes during junior and senior year, my GPA won’t be very high (probably around 3.5 and 3.6 weighted). That’s why I think the SAT will determine a great factor whether i will get in or not, but I’m just scared my bad GPA and that nasty D will ruin my chances.

Thanks for the reply and It’s hard, but I’ll keep working. I would rather not go to CC, but if it’s the only choice, then that’s what I’ll do, but I’d like to look at the best possibilitys first. I have a question about CC though. My engineering teacher said that If you go to CC, colleges will look at your grades in the 2 years you were in CC instead of your grades in high school. Is this true, or will they look at both?

Hi I wish you luck. Your determined mind tells me all the way, that you will make it.
But you need to avoid the mistakes that you have made it earlier.
Straight As and being an all rounder doesn’t always make you get into top uni, however there are many additional factors, that you need have like character, personal qualities, leadership to name a few.
You got to involve in your extra-curricular activities, and be active in your school, and do the best that you can give,( There are chances of getting accepted, even if you hv given up your grades in fresher year. You need to work well in your coming years, and dazzle. Find something that dazzles in you. You dont hv to seek advise on getting dazzled, you can visualize that from yourself and find it and work for it. That will again impress your admission officer

Boost your motivation and always think positive. How hard the obstacles comes get ready to face it

Your college grades will be much more important than your HS grades when you apply to transfer. They may not even look at your HS grades, though you do have to provide them.

@hanaanhashim91: Thank you for the inspiration speech and comment, although I want to say that I don’t fully deserve that since I’m still lazy sometimes and I do work up to 2 am and beyond sometimes because of procrastination issues that I find really hard to get rid of still. As for extra-curricular, I did x-country for a year and was in varsity tennis during sophomore (although im not a regular, but I don’t have to mention that do I? ;p). I plan to join tennis for 2 more years. I’ll work on community service and getting positions in clubs.

@2bizee: Oh I see, thanks. That’ll be my backup if things were to go wrong or UC still doesn’t accept me, but I’ll try to avoid it. As for that single D, I’ll try to ask my counselor and see what her input is on this bad situation of mine.

Sounds cool Though u dont deserve it now, you will soon deserve it
And I make it very clear, its a game with your future, your life, and once you are screwed up, no one will be looking to matter about you, but when you try to do extra-ordinary you will be eye of everyone. And as a matter of fact, its for your own good, if you could sacrifice now, you will find more in the future, and once you have made up your mind of not being lazy, its easy for you to stick to be hardworking student

Yeah, that is true, I find it easier to work once you get started, so I just need to work on starting my homework at a reasonable time, because usually once I start, I don’t stop. Although I’m still lazy and get distracted by many things, I’ll work on getting my work done first.

Everyone pretty much covered everything I had to say lol. However, when you apply, you should let them know in the personal statement about how you were determined to do better and all that stuff.

Um no its not possible to get in with one D. 3 of my friends were accepted to UCR! and when they turned in their final transcrpit, UCR rejected them. The good thing for you is that this happened there Senior Year 2nd Semester, you on the other hand have yet to be a Senior so complete your plan and make up the 2 classes you are going to make up this year and then you Senior make up your other D and im sure you will get in to a good UC, if you dont make up your 3rd D your only chance is a CC i think or a low end Private University. Good Luck.

My son finished first semester sophomore year with 4 C’s, then got all B’s and an A for the next two semesters, then all A’s, second semester Junior year. He had no honors or AP’s,and it all amounted to a 3.1 UC GPA. His SAT’s are at or better than all the top UC’s mid fifties. I guess we will see what happens.

You should use the UC GPA calculator on CSU mentor, and play around with your junior year possibilities.

Oh man I forgot to tell you why UCR rejected them, the reason was because one of them got a D in Calc AB and the other two got a D in Trig Pre Calc H. UC’s will not accept you if there is a D and you havnt made if up or are in the process of making it up. And on the sidenote the classes they got a D in werent even A-G requirement classes and they still got rejected.

Ron2324 i guess your argument is backed up by the experience of your friends. But for some nagging feeling in my head i fell i need to post. One D, the D, that ron says might just leave you out tof the running for UCS, might not be as life ending as it sounds, depending on what the D is in.
First of all Ron, the OP said that he went to the counselors, so im going to assume that the two classes he is making up are the a-g requirments. The last class might be an elective, which doesnt hold that much important unless its some class about introduction into the major he plans to go into.
Second of all Ron, it depends on what major your friends were oging into. Since they were math classes, and they wanted to go into engineering its a really really big hit for them. Also UCs recommend 4 years of math, I dont know what year they got the Ds in, but for my school, most people reach Trig by their junior year so its pretty important to their chances. Its not right to automaticcaly say that D’s will ruin your chances without of doubt. It seems wiht Chocolate’s plans if he write an amazing essay he still has the chance. BUt Chocolate you dont have to follow into the UC vibe, If you go to a CSU or a CC and transfer it might be just as good if not better. It doesnt matter how you start the race, its how you end it. ;] Good luck to you.

Please excuse my spelling and grammar in this post, Im in a rush Bye ;]

@kinetix64: Yeah, I will definitely make sure to do that. I’m also going to write how that I lacked inspiration in freshman and sophomore year and in junior year I managed to get straight A’s and also did well on the SATS, so it shows that I can be smart if I actually tried.

@ron2324: Thanks, that really answered my question. So now I can confirm that having just 1 D in sophomore year is unacceptable, but there will still be a good chance if I can just re-take that during senior year. However, I’m still scared whether they wont consider me since I still have 1 D.

@shrinkrap: How old is your son now? I would really like to know if he got accepted to any UC’s with that GPA and SAT score, so I can evaluate my own possibilities.

@WorriedJrGirl: The 3 D’s are all a-g requirements classes, so I know It’ll be important to make sure I re-take all of them before I graduate. I think if I re-take 2 classes, I should be able to show a good upward trend of improvement in my college app, and possibly have a chance. Thanks for the inspiration, I’ll try to get into a UC school first, and maybe at least Irvine, merced, and Riverside will accept me, which are decent colleges (I don’t think I have a chance at berkely or la)

I’m still concerned about one thing though. If I manage to follow through my plan, I will have 1 D still and when I submit college apps that D will still be there.
I know I can re-take it in senior year, but i won’t make in time before they have to see it. Will they even consider me when that D is there at the time, or do you think I’ll really need to write a good, persusasive essay to catch their attention?

Q1: Will I be able to get into UC with 1 D in sophomore year, but did really well on SAT’s as well as getting straight A’s in junior year?

A1: The UCs say, straight from their website:

It may be possible to repeal every D by retaking those courses at a community college. If you act fast and prepare yourself, you will be able to take 3 comm courses so that you can report them on your UC app. To do this, consider concurrent enrollment at a CC in the Spring, and don’t forget about the Summer quarter/semester where you can take classes as well.

Q2: Is there a good chance I can get into UC school if I did all the things I plan to do during the junior year (read second paragraph).

A2: Yes, it shows the determination and will to succeed despite your past circumstances.

@Sagert: I talked to my counselor today and I worked out a plan to re-take geometry in a one month long recovery program. Unfortunately for me, I took accelerated geometry and they only have regular geometry, so the grade will just average and at best all I can get is a C, but it’s all I can do since I have two other D’s to make up.

@Shrinkrap: I’m taking Chem Honors, APUSH, AP Literature and Composition, Algebra 2, Health, Introduction to Engineering

Yeah, I won’t spend the majority of my personal statement talking about that, but I do need
to give some reason or justification as to why my grades were so bad in sophomore year and than it just rose unexpectedly in your SAT scores and junior year, I’ll talk about more positive things like how I learned to manage my time better, became a better person, etc.

Dont worry aslong as your retake that other D, Senior year you will be fine, but dont be suprised if you are put on the waiting list at every UC. Because they will probably wait to see what you get in the class with the other D. Overall stick with your plan and make up the last D, Senior year and you will be seeing yourself atleast at UCR, if not even better.
