Chances of getting into any UCs? (particularly LA, B, and SD))

So I've pretty just given up on the fact of getting into a "prestigious" school or a private school...besides I'm a resident so it's super cheap to go to a UC. So what are my chances of getting into any of the UCs? I'm aiming for LA, Cal, and San Diego as the top choices, but also Irvine and Davis.

Cumulative 10th and 11th GPA unweighted: 3.8
Cumulative 10th and 11th GPA weighted: 4.52
UC GPA for 10th and 11th (I think): 4.12

SAT I
Overall - 1850
Critical Reading - 530 (ouch)
Writing - 620
Math - 700

SAT II
U.S. History - 640
Math II - 690
Chemistry - 720

I plan on retaking the SAT I and the Math II test this fall.

Extra Curricular
4 years marching band
2 years as head drum major
2 years trumpet section leader
4 years Jazz Ensemble
4 years Wind Ensemble (Advanced band)
Note I was/am first chair trumpet for the latter two years in all groups as well as section leader...Idk if that means anything

-I'm not entirely sure if the self study of AP statistics would count under this category, since I don't get credit. I was just doing this to show them my passion for math.-

Awards
Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award from University of Rochester
AP Scholar Junior Year
-I also received numerous solo awards at Jazz competitions which we compete at the highest and hardest division and got a trophy for drum major performance, but I'm not sure whether that would be worth putting-

So that's about it. The reason I don't have more ECs is because my dad has been blind since I was 3 years old and a lot of my time has been devoted to helping my family. I was gonna use that in my essays somehow, though, not mentioning the lack of ECs as that would make it sound like an excuse.

My intended major is Mathematics with some sort of specialization (applied, economics, or statistics, not sure yet).

So yup, please leave any feedback you can, it would be greatly appreciated. My mom's concerned about me getting into a good college, so I thought it would relinquish her worries if I asked here. And this a chancing for ALL UCs, with emphasis on the ones in the topic. Thanks for your time.

Your GPA is good enough for any of the UCs but your SAT score is probably not high enough to get you into upper tier UCs like UCB, UCLA and UCSD. You could probably get into UCI, UCD or UCSB if you indicate you plan to major in a quantitatively oriented field like the physical sciences or engineering on the basis of your very good score on the math portion of the SAT. The 530 in CR would make you a weak candidate if you are applying to majors like English, Political Science or Philosophy. You are almost certainly a match at UCR and UCM and possibly UCSC.

UCB- low reach
UCLA- low reach
UCSD- high match
UCD- match
UCI- match

Berkeley - high reach

UCLA and UCSD - reach

thanks for the feedback guys…so would, let’s say, a score of 2000 on SAT I be good enough to make Cal, UCLA, and UCSD matches or at least high matches? I’m sure I can boost that critical reading score to at least 600. I honestly don’t know what happened there. And I only missed 4 on the math part, so I think I can pull off an 800.

I’m not sure for LA and SD, but a 2000 on SAT I for Berkeley would put you in great disadvantage regardless of any program. And even more so for oversubscribed programs at Cal such as engineering, CS and Haas.

Fall 2010 Freshman Profile* http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/freshmen.asp</a>
SAT Reasoning Test scores (25th % 75th percentiles)

Reading: 620-740
Math: 650-770
Writing: 640-750

Kindly take note that the scores aren’t superscored as Berkeley does not superscore SATs, and data are for enrolled students, not accepted students. Historically, data for admit students are 20 points higher than data for enrolled students. Superscored data are also 20 points higher.

So, my guess is, for the admitted students at Berkeley the SAT I data (not yet superscored) would look something like this:

Reading: 640-760
Math: 670-790
Writing: 660-770

(This is already similar to Ivies)

Therefore, having 2000 SAT I won’t make you a “match” for Berkeley. That’s assuming your UW GPA is 3.93 which is just the average for enrolled students (again not accepted students which are supposed to be higher).

I have to echo what previous posters have said about your chances. I imagine you’ll need at least a 2100 to get into SD, LA, and B. However, for UCI and Davis, you might be a match right now with your current stats.

well in that case, I’ll rule out Berkeley. Besides, I heard from my cousin who was accepted and other people that they require you to spend a semester at community college and then enter there during the Spring semester. Also, does being in ELC raise my advantages for any of the UCs?

cal/LA = reach
SD = high match
Davis/Irvine = match

Some people are accepted to Berkeley for the spring(about 2000) and decide to take courses in the fall, while the rest(the majority, about 10,000) are accepted for the fall semester and begin classes like I do there in a week.

Don’t rule out Berkeley just yet. I had pretty much the same stats as you last year when applying…my weakness was in English, but I showed an upward trend nevertheless, and I even took the same SAT2s as you. All you have to do is concentrate on raising your SAT1, math lvl2 score, and US history SAT score and you’ll prob get into all the UCs. ELC does help.

Now chance “me” back, thelone:

No; don’t rule out Berkeley just yet. Too early to tell. Berkeley also look at other factors other than test scores and GPA too. So, you wouldn’t know…

Good Luck! :)

copycat 10char. great minds think alike.

Super cheap? Over $30K/yr and it takes many 5 years to graduate. At $150K, privates offering merit and good need based aid are often cheaper.

Just wanna thank you guys for all the feedback. I know it’s kinda hard to tell since I’m retaking the SAT I and Math II. @sagert, I’m not retaking the history SAT II…I may not even submit it. Since it was free, I took it to practice for the AP US test the following week (which I got a 5 on). So I guess when I retake it in October, I’ll come back for one more chancing. I just wanted a sort of “am I on the right track” to ensure myself that I have potential to get into college.

Your grades and GPA are pretty decent, but your SAT scores, unfortunately, aren’t so hot. You should definitely re-take them. And what the heck are you talking about? You aren’t lacking in ECs at all! They’re pretty good! Self-studying doesn’t count as an EC, unfortunately (at least I think so.) So:
UCB- reach
UCLA- reach
UCSD- low reach
UCD- match
UCI- match
Btw, UCs are definitely NOT super cheap.
Chance me please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/974360-chance-uc-colleges-special-case.html</a></p>

My apologies about the cost of UCs. I know no matter what, college is not cheap. I should have said cheapER…oh well. So pretty much I just need study hard for the next two months before the SAT in October and I’m good? Also, do they take November SAT scores? I assume I need to retake Math II since I want to be a math major.
