Junior year classes: Honors English, AP Calculus, AP US History, Honors French 3, Honors Bio
Senior year classes: Honors English, AP Statistics, Acting Intensive, Stagecraft Intensive, AP Physics, either French 4 or AP French (I’m going to see if I can complete French 4 over the summer in order to take AP French next year)
Extracurriculars: I am very involved in my school’s technical theater department (so much so that I have little time for anything else). I will have stage managed 3 productions and directed 1 by the time I apply. Outside of tech, I participated in Mock Trial for one year, and I’m on my school’s High School Quiz Show team, which has made the televised round both times I’ve participated.
Awards/Achievements:
- Placed a year ahead in math in 6th grade
- METG Excellence in Sound Design Award for Bildungsroman
- Sound Award at my school’s One Acts Festival
- 1st place in Kennett Alliance for the Arts Fall mini film festival
- Summa Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam for Intro to Latin and Latin 1
- French 1 Award (freshman year)
- Student of the Quarter in the Technology Department (freshman year)
I plan on doing Barnard’s Summer in the City program this summer (hopefully will show interest, other than that I doubt it’ll help), and I’m going to do an interview while I’m there. I’m interested in pursuing film or theater, which hopefully will make me stand out among other applicants. I am also learning American Sign Language. I’m not sure what else to add, but if I’m missing any useful information let me know. Thanks!
(I’ll also be taking the Biology, US History, and Mathematics 2 SAT subject tests this spring.)
You look like a strong applicant.
Thank you! I also feel like a strong applicant, but very few people from my high school get in, and a lot of the people who were rejected had similar scores to me. Applying early should help, though.
I love the great tech department experience. I feel like many students focus on a bunch of activities with minimal interest instead of just one “big thing” with intense interest–I think Barnard will really like that (also, congrats on stage manager-ship–I’m usually on the other side of the curtain but I know how tough it can be). Your scores are great–well in range–and your GPA is good. If you’re looking for suggestions, it might be a better idea to seek out real-world experience (like interning at a local theater company, or perhaps diversifying and pursuing employment in another interest) than go to Barnard Bound (unless you really love the program, in which case, by all means, go if you have the resources). I’m assuming you also block schedule, in which case your rigor looks quite good. In any case, I think you’re golden and I hope to see you in the Fall of 2017!
I suppose that now’s the time I ask you to chance me back for the same school http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19248071#Comment_19248071
@rougesneakers Thank you for the advice! I actually am applying to an internship at a local repertory theater, so hopefully if I get it that will help.
Also, I got a 1470 on the PSAT (221 SI) so I’ll probably be a National Merit Semifinalist, and based on that score I’m assuming I’ll do much better on the new SAT when I take it in June than on the first one when I got a 2180.
@tarantinq That’s awesome! Best of luck to you, though I’m sure you won’t need it. Your experience speaks for itself.
