Hello,
I am a current high school junior from New Jersey and I am wondering what my chances would be for applying to Bates.
I am planning to apply ED I.
I have a GPA of 3.6
I have taken all honers/accelerated courses, including three AP's so far (I plan to take 5 next year).
My SAT score is a 1970 after one test (I plan to take it again a few more times)
680 Critical Reading
570 Math
700 Writing
I am a varsity rower, and have been for two years.
I designed, organized, and built a garden composed of plants which were all native to my area to be used my school and local elementary schools for ecological education
I plan to attend a summer environmental science leadership course this summer from a local university (Drexel).
I participate in a soup kitchen staffed by members of my church almost every month.
I served on the leadership committee for my school's Peer Mentor program, as well as participated in said program for two years.
I was a youth leader for my church's conformation class.
I have been going on a mission trip to rural Kentucky to repair houses for four years.
I plan to go with my school on a service trip to Honduras to build schools this summer.
I have also participated in my school's model UN beginning this year.

What do you guys think my chances are, and what can I do to improve them?

Your 1970 is likely too low for Bates without a hook, like perhaps being recruited for crew, and even then you might be on the low side. What kind of rower are you? Bates has both mens and women’s crew. If there is any chance of your being recruited, and you could get your SATs up to 2100, your odds get a lot better. Crew is one of those sports that can put you a little bit ahead, as it is a sport most high schools don’t offer.

Here is a link to the Bates mens crew roster. You might look up some of these guys and see what their high school stats were, and see if yours are anywhere close. (I’m presuming you are a guy).
Cool thanks!
I’m sure I can manage to get a higher SAT score on my next try, I took the PSAT and it gave me a 205 so as long as I can bring my math grade up I should be fine…

The best thing you can do is to improve your SAT. Don’t plan to ‘take a few more times.’ Just do it once and be done. Plan to do some serious, systematic prep and you should be able to bring it up. Get the Blue Book. No excuse not to bring up that math score. Read the pinned threads from xiggi and silverturtle.

If I was to bring up my score, say to a 2100, how would my chances be then?

Look at the admission rate; that gives you a good proxy.

It’s something like 26% for regular and 50% for Ed
