I am currently a junior and I would like to know what my chances are of getting into Brown University. I heard Brown doesn't focus on SAT/ACT as much as the other ivies, however, I don't know if that is true.
Here is my info:

-Hispanic
-Female
-currently 160 hours com service, but I plan on getting at least 100 more hours. I am also in the works of organizing a charity drive where people bring goods for the needy.
-I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet, but in practice I make about a 1700 (low I know)
-I attend a prestigious arts magnet high school
-I have participated in many art showings and competitions
-Clubs: Nation Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, Free Tibet, Environmental Club
-I am taking the hardest academic courses I can
-My GPA is a 3.1 (on a 4.0 scale)

I know my stats aren't exactly great but I try really hard in everything I do and I think Brown would be a great fit for me.

If anyone has any advice or anyone who was accepted into Brown could tell me anything that would really be great.

hi Anna. mostly focus on getting your GPA higher during your senior year. at least get around a 30 ACT. you already stand out in community service and extra clubs so focus on those grades! you are a lot like me… I have a 3.2 unweighted and a lot of the same clubs :). I too hope that I get into a good school. and also make sure you stand out in your application. start writing your app this summer and get teacher recommendations early!

Very doubtful given grades. This past year at Brown some URMs did not make it with SATs above 2100 and GPAs around 4.0. Any ways, if you can increase your GPA and scores some (or if you are phenomenal in art, so that they might ignore the grades and tests scores) then apply ED to give yourself the best shot.

You shouldnt that just because your a URM that your shoe in at an Ivy. Your GPA and SAT is definitley lower than average. It also seems that you dont have any leadership positions. My advice: look at schools that are similar but stats are in your range

Honestly i really dont think you have any chance of getting into Brown. 3.1 GPA is very low and even though you are taking the hardest courseload, your GPA shows that you cant handle that level of work unless your school has major grade deflation and your class rank is really high. And a 1700 SAT is very very low for a school like Brown. I think you should aim lower. Good luck!

3.1 GPA, sorry but that really isn’t good enough. Even as a URM that GPA kind of sucks. Perhaps doing amazingly well on SAT and ACT you may have a chance.

Your SAT and gpa are really low for Brown. They may not focus as much on test scores, but Brown is an ivy that wants excellent students. Try to get your stats up though!

No one here is trying to be mean. What they’re saying is unfortunately true. That being said, trying to bring that GPA up while you can, studying HARD for the SAT and standing out in some way might help you.

What do you intend to major in? If you’re perhaps thinking of something like art I don’t know why you’d be so focused on Brown unless it’s mostly for the prestige aspect. A lot of kids applying to colleges who are on CC have this thing for the Ivies, as in: if-I-don’t-get-into-an-Ivy-I-am-a-failure-and-I’ll-be-waiting-tables-the-rest-of-my-life kind of attitude. Phooey.

If your heart is set, however, I’d say try to go for a 2100 on the SATs, or a 30 or better on the ACTs, work on the GPA in what time you have to work with, and go ahead and apply. Who knows, you might get in, and if you do get in, please look at it as a gift, not an entitlement like so many others on this board.

No one is trying to be mean we are just giving the truth. At this point, your chance at Brown is none at all. That being said, if you move your GPA and work hard for the SAT, you could have a chance. Probably 2200 plus would be needed, but go check out the SAT forum. There have been people who have made leaps that big. To be honest though, I do not think Brown would be a fit for you as the rigor of an upper level institution seems a bit much for you IMO. I think you would be much more successful applying to lower tier colleges.

What are my son’s chances of getting into Brown University. He is currently a junior. He has a 4.0 GPA (unweighted; our school does not do weighting). He has taken AP World, QP US, AP Lang, and AP Calc BC and plans to take AP Chem, AP Psychology, and Calc 3 (at Univ. of Missouri) senior year. In addition he will have 7 Honors classes by the end of senior year. ACT- composite 34; superscore- 35. SAT- 2230; PSAT- 213 (last 5 yrs the cutoff has been 210-213 in our state). He has been in Missouri All-State Band for the past 3 years, won 2nd in the state for the Federation piano competition, and other clubs, etc. Does he have a chance at Brown University? Also, on his SAT his critical reading was 680 with Math of 780 and writing of 770. Will this CR score be too low?

Well first of all, congratulations on hijacking the post…
secondly, unless your son is a prodigy at whatever instrument he plays, those specs will probably not be enough. Yes, he has very good scores, but so does everyone else that applies, and his scores won’t be very advantageous to him. He also doesn’t have any leadership (unless he does, and you just didnt post any), meaning that all he has going for him is the fact that he participated in the all state band for three years and won 2nd place at ONE competition. Like I said, if hes a prodigious musician maybe, but otherwise, he doesnt have much going for him. Although its hard to say, mostly by the fact that you say “other clubs” (that stuff is pretty important)

I don’t know where this myth that Brown cares less about SAT scores or Anything else than other top schools comes from. A quick look at their common data set will show you it’s simply untrue.

Schlaag, thanks for the response. Are you saying that he probably needs higher scores (eg ACT) or more outstanding extracurriculars? You asked what the “others” were and if he had any leadership positions. For leadership: president of NJHS in 9th grade; running for VP of NHS now (we’ll see!); field commander in marching band. Other activities: Volunteering w/ the school (works w/ underpriveleged kids); volunteers on his own- plays piano for the elderly; Calculus Club; Natl Spanish Honors Society; NHS; Breakdance Club; next yr joining Show Choir and Math team…Maybe not outstanding enough for Brown?

Alwaysleah, you needn’t be sharp. I am responding to the thread (see Post #1 by Catherine 1234- Chances of Getting into Brown). And I am new to this and doing the best I can. Thanks to everyone for all of the great info!

Just joined to say…GO FOR IT!(to the original post) Although I was accepted to Brown, I will not be attending. I got in with a rather low SAT and I hate how people here are so negative. Do your best and try to show your passion in whatever you enjoy the most as well as leadership in some activity. If you can study, try to raise the SAT to above an 1800+
Good luck!

Columbia, I know you’re new here so I’ll be gentle. It is really not helpful to tell someone they’ll have a chance at Brown with an 1800 unless they have a al hook. If you were admitted to Brown and Columbia with a score in that range, please include what your hook is in your advice. Athlete? Minority? child of the rich and famous?
