<p>It is also not helpful to tell someone they have no chance, people can still hope! I’m just telling her to apply and go for it because you will never know. I’m not saying an 1800 is a great score to apply to Brown, in fact, it is rather low but if someone can show something amazing in their app then yes, they have a chance. People are more than just numbers.
Also, no, that was not my score and I will not disclose that information but the original post is a minority too so that should help. I had a lot of extracurricular and amazing recommendations.</p>
<p>As a long time college counselor and admissions officer, I can tell you that results of the strenuous admissions process turn out best when the candidate is realistic Before Applying.Time and effort should go into selecting and preparing great apps for REALISTIC schools. when kids put a lot of effort into dream schools where they have little chance, they often don’t put in proper effort for schools that are realistic for them. A couple of reaches are fine, ut the most import schools in the planning process are safeties and matches.</p>
<p>
</p>
<p>Why? So they can waste the ~$70 application fee?</p>
<p>
</p>
<p>Can you show me something amazing OP listed?</p>
<p>The only person I’ve seen on CC that got into ivy league schools with an 1890 SAT on barely in the top 10% of the class, UNHOOKED, had extraordinary extracurricular activities:
</p>
<p>THAT is amazing.</p>
<p>"It is also not helpful to tell someone they have no chance, people can still hope! "</p>
<p>Waste of time and money.</p>
<p>A rigorous curriculum like that at Brown would not be good for OP.</p>
<p>I know I will probably get judged a lot but it is truly amazing to see the negativity around this place. As a student who just went through the application process, I feel like this site ADDS a lot of stress to the process and there is that pressure to be the perfect applicant.
I am really tired of people saying “oh, no you can’t do that” or “no, you’re never going to get there” or even the famous “don’t bother applying.” I defied the odds many times and I have many examples to show that. When I first came to the US, I was told to leave the school and look for another place where English as a second language programs were available. No, I learned English in 2 months and got perfect state exams (which may not mean much but given the circumstances I was recognized by my school district). I was told I did not have the preparation to go into Honors classes when I started high school…I ended up signing up for ALL honors/most rigorous curriculum. I stayed up later than my peers and worked even harder to learn the same information but what I did not do was give up. I did not have the same opportunities as many of you and even had a part time job to help support my family. My counselors told me to not apply to many universities because my SAT was not high enough and I had to be realistic with myself …I got into many amazing universities including 5 ivies (only applied to 5 ivies I thought were awesome for their programs). I’m a humble person and not trying to show off but I’m giving you an idea that if you have the MOTIVATION to do something, you can get so far. So please, future applicants, do not be discouraged to apply to your dream school – it is only $70 that could truly change your life and if you do not get in, be proud that you at least TRIED (also there are fee waivers). And there’s always grad school!
Yes, you should definitely apply to safety schools but ALSO to your dream school, and do not apply for the wrong reasons. If you think it is a waste of time applying because you’re not going to get in, that means you’re applying for a wrong reason. If you really LOVE a school, apply there no matter how long that application is. Also, a rigorous curriculum may seem scary but there are many tutors at these places that are willing to help and if you’re determined for something, you will do fine.
I understand what people are saying and yes, a great score, recommendations, extracurricular, will increase your chances but sometimes, it may even be just luck.</p>
<p>Good luck everyone!</p>
<p>(just trying to help-sorry for long ramble)</p>
<p>OP wanted to know his/her chances:</p>
<p>“I am currently a junior and I would like to know what my chances are of getting into Brown University.”</p>
<p>I’m not saying it is impossible for the OP to get in. But it is highly unlikely, based on the scores presented. There is no point in getting someone’s hopes up for no reason.</p>
<p>This doesn’t mean the OP should not apply, but that in a purely objective approach, the OP has very little chance without hooks.</p>
<p>The OP is a minority…wouldn’t that help?</p>
