Chances of getting into BU ED

I am a senior and thinking of applying to BUED in the fall. have a 3.8 GPA and my SAT is projected to be in the 1350 range. I do a lot of volunteering, I am a peer tutor at my school, I am the leader of Model United Nations at my school, and I do three seasons of varsity sports. I also will need a large amount of financial-aid or merit scholarships to be able to attend the school. What do my chances look like for getting in/ getting scholarships? Thank You!

I can’t really judge your GPA because I know they are different for each school, so I really recommend making use of Naviance if your school has it! It shows the average SAT/ACT/GPA students from your school who have gotten into BU had!! It’s really helpful. Also, I think that you could really increase your chance if you raise your SAT score a bit… the average SAT score for kids who got in last year was a 1450, but I think that if you get it above a 1400 you’d be in a good place. I’d also try the ACT!! I took the SAT once, hated the format of it, and got a 1280. I took the ACT once and got a 30!! For some people the results on each test vary so I’d try both  Otherwise, your ECs sound really good!! You look like you have lots of activities that matter to you which is great! I /think/ BU is need blind when looking at applications so you don’t have to worry about the financial aid in terms of getting in but I could be wrong. Best of luck, I’m applying ED too so hopefully we both get in and I’ll see you at BU!!!

Thank so much!! My school does use Naviance and it says that my current GPA is “Very Good” for BU but I haven’t taken the SAT yet so we’ll see how that works out! Good luck on your applications and maybe I’ll see you next year!!

Thank you!! Also, on Naviance if you go under the “Admissions” tab for each individual school you should be able to see a graph with all of the students at your school who have applied to BU with their ACT/SAT/GPA and whether or not they got in!! I find it really helpful, it also shows the average for kids who got in. Good luck!! (PS I did a chance me too for BU if you had the time to check that out and say your opinion, that would be great!!)

i just attended the info session at BU this week. the admissions officer clearly said there is a “big advantage” to applying early to BU. He said the mean ACT/SAT and GPA of those accepted through ED are lower than those accepted through RD. I thought this was a brutally honest and incredibly important info. He did, however, warn that ED is binding (which you already know) so you have to be prepared to commit regardless of the financial aid package they offer you. It’s a risk but if BU is your first choice, then you should definitely apply ED. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much! Quick question about ED financial aid, can’t you back out if they don’t offer you enough money? I thought that was the only thing that could get you out of ED.

The agreement you sign for ED specifically says that if you are a NEED BASED applicant that does not get enough aid to make it possible to attend, you are released from your agreement. I had the same worry when I applied, and looked into it. But it is only NEED BASED, not merit aid. Just make sure to check with the fin aid department that you qualify for this aid and that the stipulation applies to you. Also, admissions does not care about your financial situation (good or bad) when admitting, so that won’t affect you. However, they do not guarantee to meet full need if you are accepted. It depends on how badly they want to have you
