Chances of getting into BU?

Hello everyone!

My situation is basically as follows:

I dropped out high school and lived in Holland for 3 months my senior year while working at an IT academy. I dropped out as a result of sickness(constant medication/steroids to try to combat it) and just general apathy and sleeping problems. As an alternative to having a High School Diploma I earned my GED, scoring 96 and 97 percentile on writing/reading, while only scoring 69 percentile in science/math. I scored fairly low on the math and science as a result of my not having completed a math class since 8th grade.

I then enrolled in Southern Maine Community College last fall. I took German I, English Composition, Intro. to Government, and US History until 1877. I finished with a 3.82 GPA, which I'm fairly happy with since I didn't really apply myself.

This coming semester I'm taking German II(Ich kann spreche ein bischen Deutsch, aber meine Lesen ist besser), Sociology, International Relations, as well as English Literature.

I'm confident I can maintain my 3.8 GPA, if not do better.

I'm wondering, given the above information, what are my chances of getting into BU? My father graduated from law school there and did quite well, in case that helps my case. Also, I've got a friend who recently graduated from BU who said my chances are pretty good as long as I write a strong essay and have everything submitted by April, which I'm confident I can do since I'm a fairly skilled writer when it comes to essays and persuasive papers.

I was thinking that completing a two year associate's degree before applying for a transfer might help, but I'm 19, and I'd prefer to get the college experience as soon as possible :). I'm jealous of my friends!

Sorry for the life story, I just figured any background information would help in assessing my situation.

Thanks for any feedback and advice for those who respond.

I too am looking for BU for fall 2012! Your grades are strong, and the Holland thing can be well used. If you can pick up an EC or 2, you’ll be golden if your essay is even remotely good. I also have a post about this not too far up from yours.

Cool, thanks for the response nap. I’ll look into extra-curricular activities to help out my chances.

Good luck in getting in for you also!

“This coming semester I’m taking German II(Ich kann spreche ein bischen Deutsch, aber meine Lesen ist besser), Sociology, International Relations, as well as English Literature.”

Study hard for German, it scares me that you are in German 2 and write a sentence with that syntax and spelling ;-)

As for getting into BU, I do not have any idea. Keep in mind they are far more likely to accept transfers from four year universities and/or CC transfers that will enter BU with junior standing. If you do not get in for this fall, you will have an excellent shot next year if you keep your grades high.

Haha, it’s a work in progress, only studied German 3 months :). Mostly worked on conjugating verbs and translating text the first semester - this coming semester will focus more on writing in German.

How would I write that correctly, though? I’m guessing Lesen is altered to mean “reading” in that context?
