Hello. I wanted to know what my chances of getting into the engineering program at cal poly slo. my three choices for major are mechanical engineering, biochemical engineering, and electrical engineering. I would like to know which major i have the best chance of getting into. my gpa is a 4.0 (freshman to junior) and 4.09 (somphmore to junior) my SAT is a 1700 (math 630 and CR 560 so its an 1190 for both, writing was a 510) my ACT is a 26. my english was a 22 but my math score was a 32.

I have a pretty good amount of extra cirricular activities. I’m president of Interact club which is a community service club and Fundraiser for the National Honors Society. I’m also in the California Scholarship Federation, engineering club, and i was in the mentoring club.
I’m also Captain of the swim team and I have qualified for CIF the past three years. over 100 hours of community service also.

i got into slo’s electrical engineering for this next school year with similar stats just with higher SATs, you would probably be fine if your SATs were higher, also mechanical engineering is harder to get into than electrical or bio, just depends on what you really want

i had a 1960 total with a 690 on math and a 630 on critical reading, unless cal poly is the one school you really want to go to, i wouldnt suggest early decision, but i would suggest early action, which means applying a day or two after regular applications open.

but for early action does that mean that they tell you whether you get accepted earlier or not? or does taht help at all with getting into the school??

early action gets your application pressures off your back early
(they say it doesnt matter, but it does) the people reading the applications are human and do get a bit more picky at the end of application decisions

hmm. and is it also true that the school really bases their acceptances on stats like gpa and sat? i hear lots of rumors about that. like they dont bother to look at the extracuricular?

no the only thing they look at r test scores, classes taken, grades, and gpa, in the application you really dont type anything just click, they dont care about your clubs or anything, they do ask “I THINK” about number of community service hours and i remember them asking if you had held a job during high school and how many hours on average you worked, nothing else. for the UC apps there are the essays and then descriptions of extracurriculars and a bunch of other stuff, for cal poly theres basically just numbers

I believe they also ask for relevant work experience or extracurricular activities that pertain to your major. Not a 100% sure. I applied a while ago.

If Cal Poly is really your first choice then I would recommend that you do go for Early Decision/Acceptance. I believe it made a huge difference for my son who had similar test scores and grades. Not only do I think it improves your chances, if accepted, a huge weight will be lifted from your shoulders. Go for it! Cal Poly is the best!
