I live in Austin and I was wondering about my chances to get into Cockrell. I have a 3.9 gpa and a 5.0/6.0 weighted gpa. However, I’m 100/481 in ranking because my school (public) is very competitive. I’m worried because I heard you can’t get in without being in the top 10%, essentially. I looked at my schools record of acceptance to UT and for the past two years it’s been about 86%. I have a 30 composite ACT score and I’m taking AP physics C, AP Calculus, AP macroeconomics and Gov, AP Statistics, pre-AP computer science and have taken AP US and World History. I have been involved in athletics for and outside of the school during my freshman through my junior year. I have had two jobs, one of which was creating a lawn care business with my friends. I am also involved in a business club named DECA. I have already gotten into A&M and Auburn but was wondering my chances to get into UT. Thanks!

A general acceptance is different than getting into Cockrell. With that ACT score you could probably get accepted into Liberal Arts or one of the easier schools to get into. I don’t think Cockrell is likely though due to your class rank.
Thanks. My school class rank is weird because my friend has a 4.0 and takes AP classes but he is 101.
A lot depends upon which engineering major you applied to and what your ACT math and English/writing scores are. The composit ACT score doesn’t mean anything because UT doesn’t consider the reading and science scores. ECE is much less competitive than Chemical engineering. Are you in BC calculus? Why pre-AP computer science instead of AP? Why only 1 AP science? I had two children get into Cockrell and neither was automatic. Child number 2 just got into biomedical engineering November 17. Child number 1 is a sophomore in ECE. Both kids took BC calculus and AP computer science and AP bio and AP chem.
I moved here during my freshman year and my counselors just threw me into a bunch of classes that really didn’t have a say in and they never really guided me through what classes to take and when. Also, at my school, athletics took up 2 periods so I didn’t really have room in my schedule to operate. Oh well, at least I can go to A&M lol.
I applied for Aerospace and Electrical.
Plan on A&M and then it will be a nice surprise if you get an acceptance from UT. My first child didn’t get her acceptance until Feb. 22. She was planning on A&M before that happened. Her class rank was lower than yours. ACT math 35,and English/writing 31. We didn’t expect her to be accepted to UT ECE. I am sure being female helped. I think you have a chance but don’t get your heart set on it.
