I am currently applying to UT Austin, and I would like to know what my chances are to get into the Turing Scholars honors program.

My SATs are:
Reading: 680 Math: 690 Writing: 620
Reading: 660 Math: 750 Writing: 680

SAT II:
Chem: 740
Math II: 800

Rank:
3/400ish

Not much for ECs.

I forgot to mention in my first post that I live in Texas. This means that I have auto admission into the college.

I am not sure whether the lack of response is positive or negative. I guess I should be happy no one is rushing to make fun of my SAT scores. I’ll make sure to post whether I get in or not when i receive that information.

Hi Patrick. My son is a current pre-CS major. He’s doing really well. He applied for Dean’s Scholars but not Turing. He didn’t get into DS. He has great ECs and his SATs are similar to yours. Your class rank is much better.

Son is fine with being a normal pre-CS major. When we went to UT VIP last year, we heard that not that many Turing Scholars graduate TS because of the thesis requirement. It is really accelarated the first year, so be careful what you wish for.

All CS majors have better than average employement compared to other CNS grads and UT grads in general. Better buy some shades … your future is looking bright, indeed, whether or not you are accepted into TS.

Best wishes!!

Thank you for that. It is somewhat disappointing to see how hard it is to get into the honors program. You mention how hard TS is, but I believe I am up to it. Although, as my SATs show, I am not that great of a test taker, I am a driven individual and grasp concepts at a pretty good rate. If I get in, I will look forward to doing a thesis and an accelerated first year sounds wonderful. The only reason I am lacking ECs is because I am too busy with schoolwork, computer programming, and general research (not like one does for school, just to satisfy my curiosity on the huge number of topics I find interesting). If I don’t get in, and it looks like you are saying I don’t have much of a chance, I will only have myself to blame. If I’d tried a little harder and actually studied, I probably could have gotten a near perfect score on the SAT. Also, with more effort, I could probably have been Valedictorian. I could have also forfeited my time doing what I enjoy to do some ECs. If only I’d thought about college earlier in my high school career.

Thank you once again for posting. College sounds great and I am really happy to hear that employment is looking good in my future.

Do any of you know how soon I find out what I made it in to?

My son is Plan II/ Dean’s Scholars CS Major. He did not apply for Turing, and didn’t join DS until his sophomore year, but he is taking the same classes as the Turing Scholars in CS. I agree that the classes are very challenging and fast paced.

Did you apply to Dean’s Scholars too? If it’s not too late, you might want to consider that and emphasis the research and programing you have done on your own. Just because they are done on your own doesn’t mean they aren’t EC’s, particularly if you can document them in some way. For example, " I created a program that did -----. You could even attach a copy of a program you wrote.
btw-- UT takes test scores up until December 31st. I may be wrong, but you might be able to register for the next ACT and get your scores back before then.
If you didn’t attach a program you wrote or something similar to your TS application, you may want to consider supplementing. Good luck.

Thank you for that. Sorry I didn’t post back sooner. I guess I will make sure to make a point of my programming. I am glad you pointed that out.

Patrick: Did you hear back from Turing ? I’m assuming you applied by
the 10/15 prioprity deadine. Thanks -

I got my Dean’s Scholars acceptance at the beginning of November and I also got Turing Scholars acceptance in mid-December. You should most likely hear your decision soon. Good Luck.

I would think the SAT I score is a little low for Turing Scholars.

I would think Turing mostly looks at the SAT math. 750 might be high enough, especially given his 800 on the SAT II.

I didn’t really expect any more responses, so I haven’t checked this for a while.
@dnarayen Unfortunately, I hadn’t really even heard of Turing scholars by that deadline. I guess that means my chances are nearly 0. Especially at this point.

@lxslarry No, I haven’t heard anything related to the honors college yet. They did tell me I was accepted to the college of Natural sciences in with a computer science major. I am guessing this is probably bad news. Thank you for wishing me good luck, but it is looking like I needed more than that.

@ImOnOne It looks like you are probably right as I have not heard from the Honors colleges yet.

@cpq1xtbu Thank you for the vote of confidence, but wouldn’t they have told me by now if I were accepted? I am still hoping that somehow I will be, but it isn’t looking good.

Don’t give up hope yet. Mostly likely there is a waiting list. So if people who got in decline the offer you still have a chance.
