Chances of getting into CSU and UC schools for Computer Science

I’m an out of state student from Illinois. I applied to all of these schools for computer science:

UCLA
UC San Diego
UC Irvine
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Cruz

Cal Poly SLO
Cal Poly Pomona
San Diego State
San Jose State
CSU Long Beach

UW Seattle

Here are my stats:

UC GPA: 3.76
CSU GPA: 4.04
ACT: 30 (34 English, 31 Math, 29 Science, 24 Reading)

8 Honors Courses (math and science)
2 AP Courses (math and science)
Dual credit C++ programming class (c++ programming 1 and 2)

Lots of extra curriculars and community service.

A few side notes:

UC GPA is lower than CSU because UC doesn’t give extra GPA weight to honors courses for out of state students.

My programming class gives me credit for intro to computer science. I currently have 100% in the class.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on my chances. Please be brutally honest.

FYI: Your UC and CSU GPA should be the same since OOS applicants get no extra points for Honors classes. What CSU means by “approved Honors course” is that they are also UC approved, so your CSU GPA should be the same.

From the CSU website:::

In order to be an “approved honors level course,” that high school course must be identified as honors level on your official high school “a-g” course list. You can find your school’s course list at https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/all.
(Which are only CA schools)

I am using your 3.76 GPA for chancing.

UCSC: High Match
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Low Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCLA: Mid-Reach

CPP/CSULB/SDSU: Match
SLO: Reach

Are you prepared to pay the OOS costs for these schools? $36K/year to $55K/year with little to no FA?

When I applied to SLO, the application calculated my GPA to 4.04. So, that’s my UC GPA I assume?

SLO uses 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation vs. UC and the other CSU’s which use 10-11th grades in their calculation. I prefer to use the Roger Hub calculator where you get extra honors points for the AP/IB or DE courses as an OOS applicant.

As asked by @Gumbymom, can you afford $55k per year at the UCs?

Can you afford $36k per year at the CSU’s?

OOS students receive little to NO financial aid at California schools. These are public universities that are funded by California taxpayers. Priority for admission and funding goes to California residents.

Having a high school transcript from OOS guarantees that you are coming to California for educational purposes. So, that means all 4 years will be charged as OOS fees.

Price is not an issue.

Did you recalculate your CSU/UC GPA? If so, is the 3.75 or 4.04?

^SLO calculates 9-11th gpa???
oh my

Even when another poster has already mentioned affordability (which was off topic, but at least she provided chances), aunt bea can’t resist highlighting it, and yet, everyone already knows the UCs and CSUs are excellent, competitively priced schools for both instate and OOS students.

I would agree with gumbymom’s chances for the California schools and add that UW is probably a low reach based on GPA.

Good luck!

Wouldn’t UW be a mid reach or high reach for direct admission to the CS major?

Non-direct-admit students at UW must apply into a competitive admission process to get into the CS major. This includes needing a high college GPA, and essay, and holistic review.

If you attend UW without direct admission to the CS major, you need to make backup plans to (a) transfer to another college where you can study CS, or (b) enter a less competitive major at UW, for the scenario where you are not admitted to the CS major.

I chanced for general admission to UW. It would be more like a high reach for direct admission to CSE since OP is an OOS applicant. This link has more pertinent information:
