I would like to hear from some Duke alum or current students. Before you take a look at my stats, bare in mind that I have chosen Duke as my dream college because I want to learn, and I want to learn from the best. I'd also like to point out that I am an endurance person to the core wether it be in sports or academics; therefore, my course grades are far more superior than my ACT score. I would be bringing creativity (found in my writing and artistry skills) and great focus/discipline (as displayed in my high school academics) to Duke, so I would hate to rejected primarily based on standardized testing scores.

Stats:

GPA (unweighted): ~3.8
GPA (weighted): ~4.8

I've maintained a job after school three days a week for the past two years.
I am also a successful pageant competitor having won many titles in my community based on merit, talent, and physical fitness.

AP's:
*Language and Composition
*US History
Biology

"College Algebra"

I have maintained an A in all my AP classes

*received college credit for course

I have taken 2 years of French, received an A both years, but I'm no where near proficient. French is something I would like to pursue in college.

I have volunteered in my community countless times, but for the past two years I have been a mentor in the I Can! Dance Org which focuses on bringing the art of dance to students with physical disabilities.

Let me know what you think.
Thanks.

I would also like to add that I am in the top 10% of my class.
Thanks again.

Not a chance in the world. That may sound rough but unless you are a recruited athlete or a major legacy, you will get rejected.

I think you are a good candidate and a hard worker, but that doesn’t mean you will get into a hyper selective school such as Duke. You are not going to be rejected soley based off your test scores, but when they have quite plainly rejected students with super high stats and valedictorian, it’s hard to just ignore them altogether. I admire your endurance and your learning spirit. That will take you far wherever you go. Unfortunately, Duke is definitely a reach given your ACT. Your helping people with disabilities dance sounds interesting though, perhaps you can submit an art or video supplement, but that alone won’t get you in.

There are hundreds of schools out there that fulfill your criteria. Most schools there is no difference in the caliber or accomplishments of the professors. These guys work for 6+ years to get their PhDs so most of them are quite accomplished and have done significant things. Just don’t forget that passion and take it with you, because many people who haven’t gone to their dream schools have still done amazing things if they work hard. Good luck.

Unfortunately, your ACT score is just not competitive enough. Study some prep books or take a class to get it raised, or consider the SAT. Aim for at least a 30-- I know standardized test aren’t the easiest thing in the world, but colleges really weigh them a lot, especially places like Duke. I am an entering freshmen at Duke; message me any questions you have!

Take the ACT again and apply ED.
