Chances of getting into Exeter and Deerfield

I'm in 10th grade applying for 11th. Last year I got wait listed at Exeter (only school I applied to).

-I go to a really good private school and get mostly A's with a couple B's
-Haven't taken the SSAT this year but last year my scores were: Math: 99%, Vocab: 85%, Reading: 80%. That was without studying. This year I plan on getting tutored and doing a good amount of studying to get those all up in the 90s.
-Piano: 8 years, received many honors and have completed enough theory to be prepared to take AP Music theory next year.
-Trombone: 7 years, All-State since 8th grade, 1st trombone in high school band since freshman year. Participating in pit orchestra for school spring play.
-Community Service: raised over $8000 for a MS fundraiser over the course of 4 years, top fundraiser in the state for 4 years. BlueGold fundraising club freshman year.
-Lacrosse: 7 years, started on JV last year for the state champs freshman year. Coach told me I'll probably be playing varsity this year.
-Soccer: 2 years, started on JV sophomore year
-Student Council- class rep freshman and sophomore years
-Trumpet: took lessons for 2 years, self-taught for 2 years
-I've been told I make great impressions in interviews
-Don't need any financial aid

Don't know if I'm forgetting anything important but what do you think my chances are?

WOW
and you got WAIT-LISTED last year?
oh dear  you’re making me nervous

haha well I got wait listed applying for freshman year too. That was definitely because I had bad SSAT scores. Applying for freshman year is very competitive but it’s nothing compared to sophomore year. Last year it was like 300 people applying for 20 spots. Are you applying to Exeter?

OH MY GOD.
Same as DiveAlive! I can’t believe you got waitlisted! I am almost nothing compared to what you did… You are absolutely amazing, IMHO. You play three instruments and two sports!? Incredible. What were you SSAT scores last year? If you got waitlisted, then what are the stats of the students who got accepted? :open_mouth: Anyways, I wish you luck!

BTW, why only Exeter and Deerfield? Why aren’t you applying to any of the other schools? And how were your essays last year, in your opinion?

Two
sports. Meh. Pretty good.

it’s because he’s older. and there are better applicants i guess.

@bbc420,
Again, I’m in shock you were waitlisted. You’re SSAT scores seem fine. But what were your SSAT scores when you were applying for ninth grade?

angela2010peace: Those were the only two I was applying to at the time. I think my final list is Exeter, Andover, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, and either Taft or Middlesex. Also, I thought my essays were ok. Nothing that would make them really like me but nothing that would hurt my application.

SnapePotter: Completely right. They barely take anyone for 10th-12th grade (im pretty sure it’s something like 6 or 7%)

ifax108: When applying for 9th grade my scores were like Math: 94% Vocab:85% Reading 79%. That had to be the reason I didn’t get in. Also, my grades weren’t great compared to other applicants, I had like a 90 average.

So do you think you could have gotten into Exeter if you had better SSAT scores and good grades because you’ve made me really nervous.

I think so. I can’t imagine it being anything else. My ECs are good, i though my essays were fine, apparently I had great recs, and I know I had a good interview.

@bbc420,
I can’t imagine one percentile causing you not to get in. I mean, you had ONE percentile in the 70s. And it was the high 70’s. If you had answered one more question right, you probably would have gotten an 80. I really don’t think AOs are that cruel and would waitlist someone over one percentile. Now, if the percentile was in the 60s then I could imagine them waitlisting someone over that…

This is Worrying me as well but I think I have an explanation-He did not offer something special to Exeter; was the same as the rest of the crowd (NO offense intended). If he had a hook, like being a URM, etc… I would bet a lot of money that he would be accepted.

^ But there are plenty of regular people that get accepted, and being older doesnt make it harder to get in

i agree that I don’t have a major hook but I definitely have things to offer the schools, I think most of my ECs are things that I can offer the schools

The Problem is, a large number of applicants play the flute or the violin, viola, or Piano. It makes that “bland”, so to speak. If You played the guitar, which i play but have not seen ANYONE on CC who does, You would have a better chance, even if You would only have played it for 2-3 Years. I am not sure if this is correct, but it seems so. If someone would like to correct me, please do so.

guitar’s really not a unique instrument, though. just because others on CC don’t play it doesn’t mean others dont … :stuck_out_tongue: it’s probably better than playing the piano or violin to the same level, though

if you played a rare (ish) instrument well, like the glass harmonica, that might be of interest.

then again, if their orchestra/band doesn’t NEED a glass harmonica, it might be redundant as well, so you never know…

i mean i play the trombone… out of all the instruments that you need in a band I think trombone is an instrument that not too many people play compared to the other ones. And a guitar, unless your playing like electric guitar in the jazz band, doesn’t really add to any of their ensembles

i play the bassoon
not very well, but that could possibly be a good thing. i didn’t send in a CD though…

haha that’s pretty unique… yea i sent in a CD so hopefully that’ll help me

Wait-listed with those stats? Now I’m nervous as well.
