Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me determine my odds of getting into Exeter, Andover, Hotchkiss, Deerfield, etc.

I just completed the 7th grade and my overall grades for each subject are as follows:

English: B*
Art: pass
French: B+
History: B+
Math: A-
Science: A-
Strings: B (I play the cello)

My grades were all lowered because of my procrastination and lack of turning assignments in on time...
Extra information: I've been a Youth Ambassador for a non-profit organization for the past 2 years (it helps raise money for clean water and facilities in Africa), I'm very good at lacrosse, I'm an avid reader, and I sing and act on stage outside of school.

Please help! I feel like my grades significantly lowered my chances of getting into any of the above schools.

Forgot to mention: My family is from Eritrea (East African country), I'm very outgoing and can make friends easily (my teachers noted this in my report card). I'm popular (not in a bragging way) and people generally like me. I'm applying for financial aid and I currently go to an elite private school in the DC area.

*I'm actually a very good writer, but my time management issues lowered my grade

Also forgot to add: The A- in math was for an Accelerated Math class

Thank you so much!

Generally, I think you have a pretty good chance. Just make sure to raise those grades and take the most rigorous classes you can take, as competitive prep schools like the ones you’re applying to expect you to be well prepared to handle the heavy workload. Also, work on your procrastination skills, as those will not help you if you get accepted into any of the schools you’re applying to. But overall, I think if you focus more on your grades and find something you’re really passionate about to help with interviews and your essays, you have a good chance. And also, make sure those good writing skills shine through in your essays. Best of luck @booksandlax!

Also forgot to add: I’m a member of Student Council!

Yeah I plan on taking a time management class at my school this summer. Thanks so much!

Do you hold a leadership position in Student Council? It would look more impressive if you were president than if you were just a member.

I ran for Vice President this year and lost, but I’m running for President next year. Only 7th graders can run for Vice President and only 8th graders can run for President.

In that case, I hope you get the position! I was in your place a few months ago, so I know how stressful the whole application process can be. Just take deep breathes. (:

This may not be the right thread but its related on some way I’m planning on applying to bb&n, brimmer and may, and a few other schools but my ideal school is bb&n what are my chances? Here is some info about me:
Going on to Eighth grade
High honor for all four quarters starting from sixth grade until the end of seventh grade( didn’t start eighth grade)
On my midterms and finals I got all As except on b in math because the test was really hard and became excused since everyone did horrible
In seventh grade I participated in model in conference
Sixth grade I participated in math quiz bowl we won
For extracurriculars I don’t do much because I’m booked with two things all week
Arabic school I have done since third grade and I attend it Mon wed and sat
On remaining weekdays I do an afterschool program with Manu classes for example some are sports related other. academics and sometimes. Community service
In sixth grade I did approximately 25 hours of community service
I got advanced on mcas for both subjects
Didn’t take ssat yet but preparing aiming for 80-99 percentile
I am really interested in getting accepted my whole life revolves around academics
Lastly this summer or summer of 13 I took a high school extra math course algebra 1 honors and its so that I can be ahead of everyone else
In eighth grade therefore I will be taking geometry
I am very determined and not a procrastinator
Please give me an idea of my Chances
Than You

^ In complete honesty, I think you have an AVERAGE or slightly lower chance of getting into to a top school. (like Andover, Exeter or Hotchkiss) The main problem is your extracurriculars.

Once you take your SSAT we’ll be able to give you a better estimate of your chances. Were you planning on applying to the “top schools” that prepschoolplease mentioned? Right now I think you have a good chance of getting into bb&n and your other choices that you mentioned

I made the incorrect assumption (I think) that when you said “other schools” I thought she meant like HADES or GLADCHEMMS.

@prepschoolplease and @confusedonhades thank you so much for replying I was not actually planning on applying to exeter or the other schools you listed I plan on applying to bb&n/ nobles ( which i may not consider)/ Brimmer and may/ boston university academy/commenwealth school that is my list so far. What ssat percentile does BB&N look for. I just fell in love with the curriculum and everything about it was breathtaking. Since I dont have many extracurriculars what could really help me get in.
Again Thank You Guys so Much!!

academicgirl101, I know you’ve already gotten a few replies, but I would recommend you start a new thread as this was originally (and should still be) a chance thread for booksandlax.

booksandlax, I think you have a fair chance of getting in. Your grades are average-- not terrible, but not stellar either. I am a procrastinator as well. As I’m sure you know too, it’s a very bad habit to get into. However. Even if it means pulling all-nighters, I turn in assignments on time. Procrastination may be something it’ll take a while to get out of the habit of doing, but I think doing your work on time is a matter of effort and attitude (towards school). Best of luck!

I second weiqian with that suggestion. But @academicgirl101 I would check boardingschoolreview.com for all of the schools’ SSAT percentiles.
