I am currently studying in grade 9 (almost finished) and plan to go to boarding school in Canada or US (top boarding school in US) after I finish grade 10. I study in IB programme, Myp. My grade 8 grades are horrible but it's like a different story with my grade 9. For grade 8 I got myp 35 / 56, robotics for extracurriculars. But for grade 9, I got 41 for term 1 and 48 for term 2 but no extracurricular. I saw some posts and on some universities sites that ib myp 7 = A+
6 = A, 5 = B, 4 = C, and 3 = D, 2 & 1 = F so if I convert my grades I have 3 7(A+)s, 3 6(A)s, 2 5(B)s I have 50 hours of Community service hours in total right now, because it is mandatory in school. I have some certs in primary for swimming but not in secondary. However, if I do alot of extracurriculars in grade 10, as the school look at my interim reports, they will see my extracurriculars. What are my chances of getting into Exeter or Andover or other top boarding schools.
Plus. in my school, im top 10. So what are my chances....
50 community Service hours ( mandatory in school )
robotics team for grade 8 - none for grade 9
I have many many medals from swimming in primary and I continued to swim but not in school nor from swimming clubs.
Plus im asian and i have lived in canada for 2 years, hong kong for 10 years, and currently resides in ShenZhen in China. My dad said mentioning him attending Western Ontario MBA will help.

It’s not easy to get into Exeter no matter what year you are applying for. But, as you are applying for upper year, and they only take 10-25 kids for that year, it will be harder to get in than applying for prep year. I’m not saying it is impossible, but everyone is unique and as talented and smart as the next kid. If you do try, think about adding extracurriculars. Swim for your school. Try new things. Schools like adventurous kids with a focus. But, Asian may be to your disadvantage, because most schools have so many Asians and not enough <insert underrepresented=“” minority=“” group=“” here=“”> </insert>

Good luck, and remember, if you don’t get in, your life will not be over!

Do u do swimming for recreational or team sport? Exteter and andover LOVE swimmers. I was a swim recruit and got accepted to all the schools i applied to ( andover and deerfield.) if you have any major accomplishments in the sport, brag about them alot. Also, at the interview try to get a meeting with the coach cuz they will write a rec based on your visit, which usually helps. Also, don’t try and focus on HADES, but try and add some higher acceptance rate schools. Remember, andover had a 12% acceptance rate this year (dont know about exeter)
But overall, your application looks good. Hope this helps!

a few details to add

for my attendance record, it is really not so great as I have numerous lateness but I have a reasonable reason for being late. So will the late record bring my chances down. For grades, Im not scared at all, for ECs will my mandatory community service counts and I swam for around 9 years and got a lot of medals in primary, but if i start to compete and win medals and awards again, would that compensate for the weak EC activity.

Theres a reason for my lateness because I live in China but study in HK and I had to get up as early as 5 to go to school, and it takes 3 to 4 hours for me to get to school, so i have been late numerous times. But my teacher wrote it on my report card and said that if I continued to be late, I will recieve demerits. Will this work against me, or can I write a letter explaining my lateness and compensate for the weak attendance record.

Please anyone, Im desperate

Applying to only top schools like exeter and andover is a long shot no matter who you are. I got lucky. Grades really do matter so you really need to hammer home the change that occurred in you and why you deserve to have that elite education. 11th grade is a crapshoot. Amazing people get rejected from these schools.

So u mean, I should tell them why I tried to excel in my grades and start to get much better grades than last year. If so, where should I specify this - in the essay, interview or what

Thanks a lot for all of your input
