Chances of getting into Honors?

According to the FSU Honors website, the averages are:
4.3 academic GPA
31 ACT or 2070 SAT

I really want to get into the Honors program, but my stats are lower than their averages. I have a 3.8 academic GPA, 29 ACT, and a 1830 SAT. Granted, those were my first times taking the ACT and the SAT, and I took them cold-turkey, so they have a chance of going up, but I don't want to be surprised if they don't, so I'm treating them as if they're my final scores.

My GPA is so low because of some bad middle school grades. Basically, I was just with the wrong crowd, and I have a lot of Cs from it.

I do have strong ECs, but I'm not even sure if they care about it. I'm President of the Latin Club, and Captain of both the Track and Cross Country team.

Do I have any chance at all of getting in? I know I'm below the standard, but just how hopeless is my case? Does an essay have any influence on honors admissions?

First of all, I’d say you have a chance if you petition for admission. I’m confused when you say you had bad middle school grades, since they only look at your high school transcripts.

Anyways, I had a 28 ACT and 1890 SAT and a 3.85 GPA (went to high school overseas and our schools are a bit more strict than Fl schools…our valedictorian had a 4.2…and he is a genius! Anyways…) and I petitioned and was able to get in. However, in my personal statement I was able to describe my experiences overseas which may have interested the committee in accepting me. Not sure, but I feel like my personal statement was pretty good in a way that it probably stood out a lot more than others.

Do you have any volunteer work that you could talk about in the personal statement, or anything else that you can use to beef it up? I’m not sure when the deadline for petition is, but you should probably get in a petition ASAP!

I was invited to the honors program with only a 28 ACT and 1740 SAT. I did have a 4.2 GPA though.

I only got a 1970 on the SAT with a 4.0 (IIRC) fsu weighted GPA, but I graduated from HS in 2010 so reqs have probably increased since then. I think you have a decent chance if you have a good personal statement (I didn’t…and I ran out of space). You can always try to get in after your first (or second? not sure) semester. I know a couple of underachievers in HS who went above and beyond once they got to FSU and straightened up, and both of them were accepted.

My daughter did not get offered honors upon acceptance last December (3.89 W GPA/30 ACT) but petitioned when she improved her GPA after the first semester of her senior year (4.0 W). She was offered a spot in honors as well as the freshman scholarship in March.

One other thing to add to the OP…FSU superscores your SAT and ACT so taking them more than once and improving in other areas can only help you.

Sorry for the late reply!

When I say I had bad middle school grades, I mean that I took high-school level classes (such as Algebra I, Geometry, Latin, etc) in 7th and 8th grade, and they transferred over to my GPA. My test scores were good, so my middle school placed me in hard classes, but due to getting too caught up in my social life rather than my grades, it’s been a huge GPA killer for me.

I took the SAT again, and superscored, I now have an 1890, which bothers me a little because I’m so close to a 1900, but overall, I’m pleased with.

To clarify, I’m a rising senior right now, so I haven’t been accepted to the school yet to begin with. I’m just very interested in the honors program, and I’m just seeing if I’m even close to having a shot at admission into it.

Thank you for all the replies! Looks like I’m about borderline and it could go either way. It’s good to know that if I’m rejected, I can pull up my senior grades and hope to be reevaluated, thanks for that information, Slinger123!
