I'm a junior and I was thinking of applying to Maryland next year. What are my chances of getting in?
-female, african american (in a 99% white, public school)
-gpa: 3.6
-act: 24 (retaking it next year)
- currently in 2 APs, taking 4 next year
-4 years of varsity tennis..going to be captain senior year.
-Spanish & French club
- organized a fundraiser basketball game freshman year for the earthquake in Haiti, volunteered at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic last year, volunteer at the soup kitchen & salvation army..(planning on doing more things this summer)

in state our out of state? what program?

Your ACT is low, but the rest of your stats look good. If you can raise it to a 29+, you probably have a shot!

out of state and probably communications

I would think you have a chance getting spring admission based on friends and acquaintances results with similar stats. Maryland is much tougher to get into for fall. Most of the kids we know that got in for fall had 3.8+ gpa and 2100+ SAT. Although, you never know - good essays may make a difference and they like diversity. Good luck!

To be really blunt, it’s a lot harder to get in if you’re out of state, but it’s a lot easier to get in if you’re a minority. I’d say you shouldn’t have too much of a problem getting in, but scholars, honors, etc. are based largely on test scores, so you should definitely work on the ACT and maybe even give the SAT a shot (you might find it easier because everyone has different preferences).

I have to agree with Oceanicole. If you can get your ACT up to a 28 or 29 (equal to about 1900 on the SAT), you will most probably get in. Quite frankly, Maryland is one of those colleges that makes people wonder how they do admissions. One kid in my class, who is pretty bright, has a 3.96/4.68 GPA, ranked in the top 5 out of 340, pretty good EC’s, 1900+ on the SAT, and he only got in to scholars, not even honors. Several kids in my class with similar (if not slightly worse) GPA’s and EC’s with UNDER 1800 on the SAT got into honors, which I think is completley ridiculous. Also, as I might have mentioned before, kids from my school last year scored under 2100 on the SAT and recieved the BK scholarship when there are kids out there who score 2200 and 2300 and they don’t get BK. I think someone else mentioned on one of my other threads that someone at his/her school got a 2400 and didn’t even get Banneker Key. Whilst I understand that SAT scores are not the only thing that matters, Maryland should still be consistient in their admissions process. Unfortunatley, they are not.

Good Luck:)
