Chances of getting into McGill?

Ok, so I know a lot of you are probably sick and tired of these "chances of getting into..." threads, but honestly, I can't even tell you how much they can motivate/help. I feel like it's almost like an impulse, asking what your chances are at a certain uni. I don't really know, but what I do know is that when you're desperate and when you really really want to get accepted anywhere, you kind of cling to any kind of confirmation you can get.

Anyways, here's my story. I really want to get into McGill University. Honestly, it's my top/dream school, and I'd do anything to get in. It's always been my dream school, and I just find that everything about it is so ideal and so perfect for me, it's just... UGGHHH. I wanna get in so bad :(

Basically I'm an international student at an international school, it's a mixture of both the British and American system. I have the Canadian passport and citizenship though, not sure how that affects my chances, just thought I'd throw it out there. I want to get into Arts, ideally political science, maybe a double major with Psychology or communications.

11th Grade marks (by semester, in chronological order): 88, 87, 87 percent.
SAT: 1960 (will be repeating it, aiming for a 2000+)
AP's: Hopefully will be taking euro, macro, english lang, psychology, math and bio this year.
(Aiming for a 4-5)
IGCSE'S: English A, Math B, Bio A, Eco A, Arabic A, Physics A, Chemistry A
I'm a well rounded student, but I'm strongest in English (94%) and Economics (95%) as well as first year IG business studies(99%) and Psychology (93% with studying, 85% with some slacking off).

I know McGill doesn't take into account any EC's but I'll include them in this post if you guys have a university that I might be able to get accepted into with all this:
13 years of ballet
5 years of piano
2 years of athletics
2 years of volleyball
I also went to study at Harvard for the summer (Harvard SSP) for "Law and Psychology" and "Macroeconomics", and I believe I did fairly well in both.

With this, do you think I have a chance at McGill? How about UBC, UofT, and UofMichigan? What other places should I apply to?
Thanks! :D

If you elect to take A-levels, AAB will do the trick at UBC, U Toronto and McGill.

McGill: Aim for 28+ on the ACT or 650+ on each SAT2 test (and also make sure you have at least 650+ on each SAT subscore)
U Toronto: Safety (if you elect to attend U Toronto, you have to choose between psychology and communications for your second major or else you can do both as minors)
UMI: Reach
UBC: Safety

Awesome! Thanks!
I probably won’t be doing A levels… the whole A level system just doesn’t seem to be working for me, so I think I’ll be going for AP’s this year. What do you think about taking AP’s instead of A levels?

The only school that I know that uses AP tests for admission, rather than for credit, is U Alberta. Otherwise if you get 4s and 5s you may get credit for it in college.

Does anybody know if Mcgill will accept students if they are under the academic minima in one area, but they are fine in all of the others?

Here are McGill’s standards for American applicants, they may differ slightly for students from other countries but they are a good baseline for prospective international students to use.

[Admissions Standards - U.S. High School | Applying to Undergraduate Studies - McGill University](http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/standards/unitedstates)

To give you an answer we need to know, what minimum are you under and by how much to be able to say whether it will have a major impact on your application. Please post the relevant stats to get an answer.

Hello NamelesStatistic, I don’t know if you can answer my question, but do you know if the minimum requirements can 100% make or break your chances of getting in?

I exceed every single requirement set out by McGill by a substantial amount except for the critical reading subscore in which I have a 590. On McGill’s website it says that the minimum is 620. Does this mean that I automatically will be rejected?

My other stats: UWGPA: 3.7
SAT: 590 CR, 800 M, 710 W
SAT II: 790 Chemistry, 730 Physics, 750 Math I

Thanks for reading!

@kyle76
The issue is that your 590 is below the University wide minimum, not just below the minimum for a specific department (which are generally higher), which if it was the case would still allow for some wiggle room. I think that any admissions officer looking at your profile would probably overlook your CR score in lieu of your overall solid superscore and good gpa. You are right to worry that your CR score might get you automatically screened on the first review of applications. Therefore I suggest that you contact the admissions department at McGill and explain your situation to them. They will be able to help you best.

Remember though you are not aiming for the university wide minimums, even achieving them will far from guarantee you admission. You are aiming for the standards of the department you are applying for (eg. life science wants a A- average in grades 10,
11 and 12; A- in each prerequisite math and science; each SAT I and II 670 or ACT 30 (subscores 26 or higher)). If you were to apply to life science with only the minimum university-wide scores (620, 560, 610) you would likely not be accepted. Make sure you check the standards for whatever department you are applying for (there might be a bit of room to maneuver if one score is a little below the department minimum), don’t just use the raw university wide minimums as standards.

The undergraduate admissions department will be able to provide you with far more information than I can, so I strongly suggest that you contact them about your situation.

Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for the response. I will definitely try to get in touch with the undergraduate admissions officer very soon. McGill has been my top choice for many years, and I will do whatever I can to give myself the best chance of getting into the school.

Thanks again for the help. Thanks to @Catria too…College Confidential did not allow me to respond to the private message.
