Chances of getting into MIT/Caltech

Hello there I am a freshman in High School and I have a serious passion for science & mathematics revolving around engineering. I attend a Science and Technology high school while I am not much of a well rounded student I am well rounded in my area of passion meaning when it comes to engineering I do everything that I can to immerse myself in it. My dream is to go to MIT or Caltech because the thought of collaborating with such great minds there and creating something that can change lives truly motivates me so I am wondering what would it take to be accepted into one of those wonderful schools. It would mean a lot if you could take this question seriously and if a former MIT or Caltech student could answer this or an admissions officer can answer this it would mean a lot. I am looking for:
- Grades
- Courses
- General SAT/ ACT scores
- ECs
- And just general information that can set me on the correct path

Thanks in advance.
Also if you want to send me a private message about how you got into Caltech & or MIT you may also as well I would highly appreciate it.

Here are the results threads for the people that got into these two colleges:

For MIT: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/1428656-consolidated-mit-class-2017-ea-rd-results.html</a></p>

For CalTech: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/california-institute-technology/1046529-official-caltech-class-2015-ea-rd-decisions-thread.html</a> (This was the newest one I could find)

Thye should help you see what people did to get into these colleges. You can probably find some older versions (from previous years) as well. Good luck.

Thank You!

You’re a freshman? My best advice would be to focus on high school, not college. Absolutely leave this site and do not come back until late junior year. Trust me, it will be much better for you.

I think you should stay on this site and try to learn as much as you can. I’ve spent a lot of time here and I turned out fine.

You trying to drop toes? ^^

The best advice I can give is forget college while you’re freshman. Just maintain a good GPA and good class rank( valedictorian helps immensely) Take the PSAT and the like in sophomore. Study a bit for SAT. Then become serious in Junior year. Good bye till then! Come back in junior year. Good luck! :)

I agree with the other posters that you should focus on high school and not college for now. The one thing I will say though is spend some time planning your course load for the rest of the three years of high school. I don’t just mean “2 AP’s next year, 4 AP’s Junior year, etc”. What I mean is that most high schools have prerequisites for certain classes, and some classes are only offered one or two periods per day, so it’s impossible to take AP Physics and AP Bio together or stuff like that. Figure out what the “standard track” is, figure out how flexible your school admin is about “following the standard track”. For example, if your math is exemplary, are you allowed to take Honors Physics as a Sophomore even though you’re supposed to take it as a Junior? Can you skip honors physics all together? A lot of this requires planning, haggling with teachers and guidance counselors, passing certain tests, nagging for recommendation letters etc. It largely depends on what your own ambitions are, what you’re capable of tackling. Whatever plans you have will likely be adjusted year-to-year, but you don’t want to be stuck the end of Junior year realizing that it’s impossible to take the 4 AP classes you want to because 3 of them are conflicting and you didn’t fulfill a prerequisite for the 4th.
