Chances of getting into NYU ED w/ 3.4~

I messed up my first couple years of high school and (stupidly) didn’t put as much work in as I know I definitely could have, so now that app season is rolling around I have an unweighted GPA of 3.45.

However, I really started focusing junior year and got an 3.83 last year, which really brought my cumulative up, and this year I’m gunning for a 4.0, even though I know they won’t see my senior year grades. I’ve been in love with NYU since I was in middle school, but I’m worried I’ve ruined my GPA beyond repair.

I’ve been trying to compensate for it though, my SAT score is a 1480, but I’m going to try to push it to at least 1500 in October, and I’m being predicted an IB score of 40/43. I’m also really active in my school community, I’m a varsity volleyball player & my school’s first black female student body president. I’m going to apply Early Decision, but can someone let me know my honest chances? Thank you.

What’s your parents’ budget?
What’s your EFC?
Do you live in NYC?
Have you run the NPC for NYU and was the result affordable?
For NYU, your 40/43 predicted will be more important than gpa. Make sure your GC highlights it!
So, if you apply ED, I’d say your odds are higher than most.
However, odds aren’t good they’ll be affordable. NYU has lousy financial aid and they definitely do not meet need.

I’m an American living overseas so no, I don’t live in NYU, but my parents are very supportive of NYU and they’ve known its my dream for a long time

I didn’t even think NYU would really take IB scores into account, so thank you for that! @MYOS1634

Excellent if they’re supportive, but what is their budget for college? Can they pay 70k? 40k?
Ask them right now. This is a HUGE amount of money.
If you live abroad and have GCSE/igcse/ a recognized lower school certificate (OLevels, DNB…) you can apply just with that and IB predicted scores, test scores and GPA aren’t needed for NYU.

Yes. They can pay. They know how much NYU costs. I’ve been in an American curriculum, so I’m planning on using predicted scores, SAT, and my GPA.

Okay then - that 40/43 predicted + being full pay + ED means NYU isn’t a safety due to the GPA, but a match (50-50).
Do apply to a few Universities that have rolling or EA admissions (if money isn’t a problem, possibilities include Pitt, Fordham, AU, UMN, NCSU…) Always apply to the Honors college, using your excellent IB predicted scores and test scores.

Firstly, I don’t think applying ED to NYU wouldn’t give you too much edge. NYU has similar acceptance rate between RD and ED. But if your current high school has a trimester system, applying ED2 or even RD will include your senior year grades (at least for the first trimester) and so is recommended.

If you also can show a higher Weighted GPA, it will help too, as it will show you did well in tougher classes. My friend’s daughter was admitted to NYU CAS (so was my son) both this year and FYI, her stats are: 3.4 UW. 3.9 (W) 2150 (Old SAT). Good luck!

@jyc1230 My school doesn’t do weighted GPAs, but I figured even though ED has about the same acceptance rate, its a smaller pool right? Although my school does not have weighted GPAs, I’m hoping my IB predicteds will sort of act as that, because I have been taking the full IB course for the past 2 years, which are the most rigorous classes offered at my school. Unfortunately my school does semesters, not trimesters. Congrats to your son, and thank you.

If NYU is your absolute favorite and you have no problem with the binding clause, then you can apply ED, because if you are denied and moved to RD, they may think you are more committed to NYU than many other applicants. That is probably the only benefit you will get by applying ED.

I’d like to make one thing clear. Traditionally NYU has shown the same accept rate between ED and RD. But I am not 100% sure about the last year’s stats. Last year, the overall accept rate of NYU dropped to 27% from previous 35%. I suspect this may have changed its traditional trend. The best way is ask the admission officer at NYU and hope they will give you some tips. Best luck!
