Chances of getting into NYU

hey guys! i just want to know what my chances are of getting into NYU

I’m a black girl from Florida in a low income family (30k a year), two sisters, single parent household, and low income school
I am in the International Baccalaureate Program (extremely intensive)
Courses for Jr and Sr year

  • IB Spanish 4
  • IB English (took the AP Lit Exam)
  • AP US History (3)
  • Theory of Knowledge
  • IB Math Studies
  • IB Chemistry
  • IB Economics
  • IB Spanish 5 (will take IB exam)
  • IB World English (will take AP and IB Exam)
  • IB HL History (will take IB exam)
  • IB Math Studies (will take IB exam)
  • IB Chemistry (will take IB exam and AP Exam)
  • Theory of Knowledge
  • IB Economics (will take AP Micro and Macro Exam along with IB Exam)

Overall I have taken to date 5 AP Exams (from sophomore to senior year)

also i applied to stern but i want to go into the Steinhardt Biz of Music

your ECs seem pretty good, and if you do have strong recs and a good essay, the only thing that will hurt you is your GPA and test scores. your WGPA is fine, but your UW is quite low and this may hurt your application; your test scores are below the 25th percentile for NYU as well.

Why did you apply to stern if you want to go to steinhardt? steinhardt is easier to get into than stern, and you would submit a portfolio for music biz, which, if it’s very good, may make up for your gpa/scores and help your application. Stern demands significantly higher stats than steinhardt. For stern, you would need AT LEAST a 3.8 UW GPA and a 1500 SAT. For steinhardt, with a good portfolio, you could manage with a 3.5 and 1300.

Notice how both schools are slightly out of range for you at the moment. If your heart is set on NYU, I recommend you look into the Liberal Studies Program. It accepts students whose stats are a bit low for NYU, (generally considered to be a “back door” to the school) and it’s basically a program that makes you study on a more reading-based curriculum, fulfill core requirements, and study in a smaller class setting for the first two years (think of a more liberal arts college environment) and after those two years, you become a steinhardt student (if that’s what you want). You still graduate in four years and your diploma will only say “steinhardt music business”, nothing about the liberal studies program.

I would also recomment applying Early Decision II if NYU is your absolute first choice, as this may help your chances.

tl;dr: to maximize your chances of getting in, apply to the Liberal Studies Program (early decision 2 if you can). your stats are too low for stern, but if you apply to steinhardt you may have a chance. LSP is your best bet at the moment though.

thank you for this! I was bit confused while filling out my common app because i didn’t see Steinhardt on the application which is totally my fault. I contacted NYU already to get it changed so i just need to wait till the 4th to officially change it. Also i appreciate the feedback for the Liberal Studies Program I will do some research and see what i need to do for that! thanks again!

update: my weighted is a 5.2 and im in the top 20% of my class in my district
