Chances of Getting into OMSP (Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program) (MSU Direct D.O.)

I really want to get into this program. I recently heard about it from my friend. My G.P.A. is low, and little can be done to improve it, but this upcoming summer is the deal breaker. If anyone is currently in, or has prior knowledge about this program please help me out!

School: International Academy (Full IB School)
Classes: All IB classes
G.P.A.: 3.42 (Maybe 3.48 by end of semester)
Grade: Junior
Club leadership: President of religious club - Board member of fitness club
Sports: Freshman - Junior Varsity Basketball. I hope to get a early call from my coach this summer for Varsity.
Volunteer: 100-200 hours at hospital. Shadowed a osteopathic doctor. Helped a clinic that provides free health care.
Community service: Two fundraiser for food aid.

Please let me know what I can do to IMPROVE my chances, and if I applied right now, what are my chances?

My weighted G.P.A. is a 3.8!

I just got into the program so I can help! So far on your application, the leadership roles look pretty good. Just try doing more activities too. What’s your act or Sat?

Sorry for late response. My ACT is a 31, but I’m pretty sure I can increase to a 33+ hopefully. Could you tell me what else to do. I still got one summer to go! Thank you!

I’m in an IB school too! The act score is great because they recommend getting a 28 which I have. I guess just occupy yourself in the summer doing your leadership roles and health care roles. It looks good that you showed an osteopathic doctor even though I didn’t. The thing you can do now is find your teachers to write letters of recommendation and maybe get an idea of what to write for the essay. Also, keep your GPA high as can be. Hope this helps!

Thanks. What activities do you suggest? Will my GPA limit my chances of getting accepted? Does my senior year semester one GPA count towards my cumulative? Thanks for your help. I really want to go to MSU and the only way my parents will allow me to is if I get into this program!

Your GPA should be good. They look at overall GPA which is your weighted. Their GPA requirement is 3.5 or higher… 1st semester senior year grades will count. Therefore, you should try your hardest there too. As for activities, if you really want to boost your chances, try participating in MSUCOM’s Future DOcs program or Osteochamps program. This will show your commitment to wanting to know more about osteopathic medicine. Also, just keep volunteering at the hospital and other community services. I would also recommend shadowing more osteopathic physicians, too.

Kind of late but I’m curious if you ended up applying & if you got in.
