Hello - I am just starting my senior year high school and am worried about if I can get into Penn State. Here are my stats up through Junior yr:
Weighted GPA - 3.933
Unweighted GPA - 3.802
SAT Math - 690
SAT Reading - 520 (worried about this)
SAT Writing 490 (worried about this)......taking SAT and ACT again Oct '10
ACT Composite 25 (Math 31, but English 22....)
Class Rank - top 20% (24/118)
Eagle Scout with 3 palms; counting senior year : 5 AP classes, 5 Honors Classes.
Captain Cross Country & PIAA States finals last year, lettered, Soccer letter, Track letters, National Honor Society, German Honor Society, Math League, WCCC Orchestra, Church Usher volunteer weekly,..and a few other minor things...

Do you think I have > 50/50 shot??? Please let me know your opinions!! Thanks....

Thanks…yes I am taking SAT and ACT again in October…hope to bring the ACT up to 26-27 (especially focusing on bringing up that horrid Engilsh 21 up to something like a 25/26…and on SAT hoping to boost reading from 520 to about a 560 and writing 490 to about 540 or so… then I will feel much better about my chances if I can do that.

Apply early (a MUST) and you should be in good shape unless you’re applying to a super competitive major (like business, architecture etc.) When good students don’t get in to PSU-U Park it is usually because they didn’t their application in by the priority deadline. There’s no reason not to apply early that I know of; it’s an easy application to do and the personal statement is not required. PSU gets 100k applications so they pretty much do admission by the numbers – 2/3 of it is weighted GPA, then SAT and other stuff.

If you want to maximize your chances, consider applying for summer session. Many majors run really cool summer programs for freshmen and you get a lot of advantages from the advanced standing the rest of your career at PSU. For people in difficult majors like engineering, a summer start can be really helpful.

Wow - thanks for all the great info… I did apply at 12:31 AM this morning after the app just went live at midnight, did the personal statement and the activities list (I had those things already done 8/1 on the paper application, but when I visited PSU on 8/2 they would not accept it and told me to wait till 9/1.) I also did check off the box that I would consider summer session. Someone else also told me it is best to say yes to the summer box on the app. THANKS AGAIN!!
