Okay, so I'm just a sophomore, but I have toured Rice and looked online and whatnot, and I absolutely love it. So just curious how good my chances are of getting in. Here are my stats:

Weighted GPA: 101.5 (my school doesn't do unweighted)
PSAT: 2070 (That was my first try, so hopefully it will get higher)
Rank: 7 in my class of 525
AP: I have only taken two because that's all that's been offered so far, but by graduation I will have 13 (Human Geography, World History, U.S. History, Government, Economics, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Anatomy, Calculus, Spanish, Psychology, Sociology)

Here's the bad part- my EC's aren't so great:
National Honor Society- 3 years
Band- 4 years
Marching Band- 4 years
Spanish Honor Society- 3 years
Spanish Club- 3 years
Premed Club- 3 years
SADD- 3 years
Volunteering at hospital- 3 years
Tutoring children at local privet school- 3 years
And a bunch of other volunteering that I don't need to list individually

A big list of activities, but no leadership at all. I am hoping to change that.
-I also might be able to score an internship next year. Not sure though.
-I may be able to travel to Peru to teach children English, but not sure

Ok, so those are my stats. Please let me know what you think. Don't sugar-coat anything- I want to know honestly my chances. In fact, if anything be a little negative. I don't want to get my hopes up.
Thank you so much for helping me out :). If anyone needs me to chance them back, let me know.

P.S. does anyone know how I could go about finding research opportunities? Where do you look for that? Please let me know.

your ecs are not bad at all, its just that everyone else on this website has a ridiculous list of activities that seem impossible to do them all but anyways i think you have a good shot, just maintain your good grades, and your only a sophomore you have all of next year to gain leadership positions. good luck!

I would say you have a very good chance at getting into Rice, kat1234 is right, even though your not in any leadership position, you still have a year and a half!

P.S. 13 AP classes?!?!? hahaha

really? I mean my SATs and EC’s seem a bit below standard. I know Rice is a pretty competitive school. It’s also expensive, so I would need some sort of merit scholarship, which seems unlikely with my resume.

If you love Rice, apply early. Your chances of getting in are more than doubled by applying early vs. RD. (Sister got in through ED, but the top 3 at our HS got waitlisted through RD)
As for research opportunities, find a med school (or possible a college) and email professors with your resume and what you are looking to research in. The worst they can say is no (although you might want to wait until your junior year to seek research opportunities), and if they say yes, you’ve got a winner.
Pursue the med thing so you’re not “too well-rounded”; shadow a physician, do something big through your premed club, etc.
FYI, I don’t think there’s such as a thing as AP anatomy?
Good luck on getting into Rice!

Thanks, superkelpie. Only problem is that I can’t do ED because I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford Rice or not. It depends on if I get any aid. But thanks for the advice on finding research, I’ll definitely try it.
I am planning to continue with music in college and to study (and maybe minor in?) spanish, so I think my EC’s are pretty relevant. But I’ll definitely keep looking for more med-related opportunities.
Thanks for all your help. If anyone else has suggestions or will chance me, I’d really appreciate it.

Everything looks good, but there are no AP anatomy or AP sociology classes, still 11 ap’s is very nice, it is what I am on track for too!

Rice is all about ECs and SAT, do well in both and you’ll probably get in. Your grades look great and 13 APs will look crazy good (just make sure you do well on the tests). Research is a big bonus to your application so get started! I recommend calling nearby hospitals or research labs asking for intern opportunities (that is if you want to do scientific research). It is a pretty tiresome task to find research opportunities but it is worth it. You can also call your local representative and ask if they have any intern opportunities. They almost always do ----> interns = free labor. Happy Hunting!
Chance me too if you can. :)

Anatomy and sociology aren’t ap tests

huh. that’s odd. I guess I misread the course thing and they’re just honors? well, anyway, thanks for your advice. I’ll chance you yayahyem.
I’ve already got one, maybe two, internships lined up, but I’d really love to do research.
