Hope to volunteer at MD Anderson over the summer (want to be an oncologist)

And GPA of 5.5 on a 6.0 scale

How about SAT or ACT scores?

I haven’t taken any official tests but I got a 187 PSAT with out preparation

Nothing that really stands out, but good luck!

Does it help I know many alumni, friends of the president, and employees of the university?

It can help a little bit, it usually helps a lot more if you have legacy though. Your test scores will almost definitely be low for rice considering your PSAT.

I am sure my scores will be higher as the PSAT was with absolutely no preparation

Ok then. I never have done any prep, and I don’t support the idea of prep for ACT or SAT, but that’s your choice.

Thank you for your help! Is there anything to do to increase my chances? Is it worth my time to even apply?

Add in a few more Extracurriculars you are passionate about, if you have time. Try to get recruited for running if you can, because it sounds like you’re good.

I don’t know what extracurriculars I could add. I am in sports, music, academic groups, and philanthropic organizations. Any suggestions?

You can always add another philanthropic EC, or one thing I would recommend is starting your own club/organization for an idea you are passionate about such as uniting your community, reaching out too the less fortunate, etc. it would show initiative.

Alright thanks!

Rice: Reach

How can I make it less of a “reach”? Should I even apply? I am going to be pre-med and Rice is very expensive for an undergrad followed by an expensive med school.

You know what characteristic your safety should have: less expensive than Rice.

My safety is UT. I have automatic acceptance. Would you recommend this over Rice?

Got to take ACT or SAT and get higher than what you got on PSAT. How rigorous is the curriculum? Essays are important, and so are your recs. I don’t really think anyone can give you a good idea about chances for Rice without more pieces of the puzzle.

My curriculum is very rigorous. I have always been in honors and started taking AP’s my sophomore year.
