Chances of Getting into Rutgers Pharm?

Hi, I'm a junior right now and I was wondering what the chances of me getting into Rutgers-or any other PharmD schools for that matter-are. I live in New Jersey and I'm hoping for a school nearby.

I was born in Korea but went to elementary, middle, and high school in both Korea and the US. I spent my 9th and 10th grade in Korea, and another year in 10th in the US. Due to the fact that I spent most of my childhood in the US, my GPA from Korea wasn't all that good so it's bringing down my GPA a LOT. I talked to my guidance counselor about it and she said that it was more likely that schools would pay more attention to the grades I got in the US. What are your opinions? Is that really true?

GPA: 9th-3.3
10th in Korea-3.15
10th in US-4.0
11th(for now)-4.0

Last time I looked at my transcript, weighted: 3.4something, unweighted:4.3

SAT: 2160(CR/M/W-760/700/700 I'm planning on taking it again for the third time next March to raise my math/writing grade :/ )

SAT II: Planning on taking bio in May, chem in June, and math 2 in September

AP classes: bio, lang&comp(will take tests this year) physics, calc a/b, chem(senior year)

EC: RCY VP(9), RCY President's Award(9), Green Doctors' President's Award(10), volunteered at Solidarity for Migrant Immigrants(10), 3rd dan (black belt) in Taekwondo(10), president/founder of anthropology club(10), Hyundai Piano Competition runner-up(10), in-school volunteering(10), pit orchestra(10), Children&teen's ensemble at church(10-11), Junior Editor of church newspaper(10-11), art club(10-11), mural club(10-11), environmental club president(10-11), future healthcare professionals co-president(10-11), summer school TA(10), hospital volunteering(10), Asian cultural club co-president(11), peer tutoring(11), national honor society(11), French club(11), math league(11), science league chem varsity(11), etc.

Sorry for the long post! I would really love to hear any comments/suggestions. Thanks so much!

You have a good chance. Just keep in mind that Rutgers Pharm tends to look at MOSTLY stats (GPA, SAT/ACT, Rank) over ECs/essay regarding acceptances (but not necessarily true for scholarships).

Good luck!

That’s what I hear and it worries me  I’ll have to try really hard to raise my scores this year haha thanks!

Just saying, your critical reading score is very impressive.

Thanks for the compliment! I hope my math and writing scores will be more like my reading score when I take the SAT again this March haha

Hey, I’m a Korean living in NJ and I got accepted to Rutgers Pharm this year. My SAT score was a 2170…so I’m guessing your SAT score is fine. But try to bring it up to near 2250 so that you have higher chances of getting in (and scholarship). And definitely focus on GPA. Your extracurriculars don’t matter much unfortunately. PM me if you wanna ask more questions :)

I hope they’ll understand and disregard my GPA from Korea…bleh :stuck_out_tongue: I finished this semester with a 4.0 and I hope to do the same for the following semesters ahead of me! And I really do hope I can get a scholarship by raising my SAT scores this year hehe thanks for your positive feedback :D

@hkim0713 I wanted to PM you but I don’t have enough posts to do that. I just wanted to know if there was a way to let any of the schools know about the reason behind my low freshman/sophomore GPA from Korea. Do you know if they’ll understand and pay more attention to my American GPA? If you don’t, that’s okay. Thanks in advance.

with your ECs you’re fine. just take your subject tests and submit your application as early as possible! good luck!

Oh I hope you’re correct  I guess the main reason I’m worrying about this is because I have a very close friend at my school who wants to apply to the same schools as I do and she has a better GPA than me since she stayed in the US her whole high school year…Is it common for schools with pharmacy programs(especially Rutgers) to let two students from the same school join their program? Sorry for rambling and good luck to you, too! Thanks for your advice :)

@GAGA: sorry to reply back to you just now. I actually came to NJ sophomore year from Korea. My GPAs from sophomore and junior years were much higher than freshman year’s. I think as long as your grades show improvement, it’ll be fine. But Rutgers is really random when choosing students (like I’ve seen some people with SAT score 1800s get in but 2150 rejected).

Not late at all, I appreciate you replying back to me. Well I guess if they DO look at my improvements throughout my years in high school, then I guess I’ll be okay…? I mean, if it’s that random, I guess no one really has a definite answer, huh? Thanks for your insight!

yes! multiple kids from my school get accepted every year!

Woo! That’s some reassuring news  Thanks for the info hehe

Oh, and I think the high school you’re attending plays a pretty big role, at least in NJ. For my school about 5~10 people are chosen for Pharmacy each year, so maybe that’s why I had a good chance. Just a thought!

I think only three people in my grade are applying for pharmacy and I wouldn’t necessarily say that my school’s a highly competitive one  I know that the last year, only person applied for pharm and she went to URI so I’m not really sure…

that last year, only one person*

I know exactly how you feel since I’ve felt like that last year. But your SAT is good…I say you raise your math more to the high 700’s and focus on your GPA right now to boost it up and you’ll be fine.

&& I don’t know if people told you that if you apply sooner, you’ll have a bigger chance of getting in. I applied in early October and didn’t hear back until mid-December. Some of my friends who applied in November heard back in two weeks. So I’d say…don’t rush, take your time, but make sure to apply before November 1st!

So…you’re saying the whole “if you apply earlier your chances of getting in/hearing back from the school is greater/earlier” thing isn’t true? Alrighty  well thanks a bunch for the advices and I’ll make sure to raise my math and focus on my GPA. Best of wishes to you!

I just wanted to update that my March SAT score came out today and it was 2320-one sitting!(CR:760 M:800 W:760) Woo! I’m hoping that my chances of getting in went up slightly. Thanks for the advices and I’ll be back with more questions in the future :)
