Chances of getting into Sac State and Chico State

I narrowed my choices down to Sac State and Chico State and I just want to be sure that i could get admitted. This might sound stupid but Im just a little worried of getting rejected for being “over qualified” lol.
-Sacramento Resident
-I want to major in Construction Management or Civil Engineering
-my SAT: 1140 out of 1600
1680 out of 2400
-Unweighted HS gpa: 3.4
Sac State is my first choice since its my cheapest option. I just need someone to tell my chances of being admitted. thanks

Cal States admit based on the Eligibility index (EI). Calculate your CSU GPA: https://secure.csumentor.edu/planning/high_school/gpa_calculator.asp

Then calculate your EI: (CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math + CR)

For Sac State an EI of 3100+ and for Chico State an EI of 3700+ should be good. Much will depend upon the current year’s applicant pool since EI thresholds will fluctuate year to year. For more information about these schools, you could PM a frequent CC poster @NCalRent whom has first hand knowledge in regards to both these Cal States.

Good Luck.

I graduated from Sac in the dark ages and still live in the area. My son is currently a Jr at Chico and LOVES it.

I’m kinda chuckling about your concern of being over-qualified for Sac and Chico. What do you mean by that?

From the stats above, you should be OK for both schools - as long as you’ve completed the a-g courses. Nobody has ever been turned away for having a high eligibility index.

Both schools have honors programs that are worth looking into, You qualify/apply separately - I don’t know if you meet the threshold or not.

Both schools have solid reputations (especially in N Cal).

Chico will give you more of a ‘residential’ 4 year experience. The school is smaller and has far fewer student that commute from home. The Chico campus is more cohesive and literally spills into the city around it, whereas Sac is all but vacant on weekends, has a more haphazard look and feel and is bordered by hwy 50, the American River and raised railroad tracks - isolating the school from the surrounding area - and making for traffic headaches. I assume you’ve visited Sac and would encourage you to tour Chico while school is in session. The campus has a very different feel.

I am among those who believe you’ll learn more in college outside the classroom than in… Living in a dorm and then an apartment/house surrounded by fellow students is a once in a lifetime experience and (to me) is well worth the cost. If your family can afford it -

I am happy to answer any specific questions you have.
