Chances of getting into schools such as CWRU, Kenyon,URoch

Hello! Just making a general “chance me” for some of my top schools.

Currently, my faves are Kenyon, URoch, and CWRU. In that order. I also toured Cornell, although not my favorite surprisingly I will probably still apply. As well are Ohio University, and probably a couple more in state schools (Ohio if you haven’t noticed lol)

Academic stats:
Rising senior in a small, rural public school in Ohio. Female, first gen
Anticipated major: astronomy/physics
Weighted GPA 3.97 (capped at 4.00)/School does not report unweighted.
ACT: 27. Retaking in September, hoping for a 30+
SAT: Lower, not submitting.
Rank: Top >5% out of 150
Fresh: Advanced classes
Soph: Advanced classes (AP not offered till junior)
Junior: AP Gov (3),AP Lang (4)
Senior: AP Calc AB, AP Physics C, AP Psych, AP Lit
**Note on AP’s. School offers 6 APs. I am taking Lit online because it couldn’t fit into schedule. Also taking Psych online bc it is not offered.

EC’s
Founder, president of Astronomy Club
Youth in government (secretary junior year)
Student Council (hopefully for pres/vice this year)
OSA (my schools “equivalent” of NHS sighs. Will try for leadership position this year)
Camp counselor at a summer camp every year, I plan and help teach STEM sessions.
Also involved in spanish club somwhat, a community astronomy club, pointe ballet, piano.
No major awards, other than honor roll and making the deans list for a couple college classes junior year. As well as a couple community/school related art awards

Recs: I think I can get good ones, I already know who I will be asking.

Essays: I think I could write a great essay. Currently have a few ideas, I have already started preparing.

Financially: ~55k, parents won’t be able to contribute much at all.

Kenyon strengths:
Toured, had a 1 on 1 info session.
Emailed a prof and came in to talk on another date.
Arranged to connect my astro club with the physics department (field trips, etc)- nothing set in stone until thr school year starts.
Will be interviewing.
Will be signing up for an overnight.
Also Kenyon is local, so I thinkt that could be a strength.

CWRU:
Toured.
Will be interviewing.
If they have an overnight, I will do that (haven’t looked into it)

URoch:
Toured last week.
Interviewed, it went really well (at least appeared to)
Talked with someone privately in the physics department.

I think OU will be a good safety. Probably will look into the Honors College. I also need to find a couple other instate schools.

I mentioned Cornell… for the longest time it was my dream school but honestly after I toured it last week, I found I loved Roch a lot more. I did email a prof at Cornell and talked privately with him while there. There was no formal tour available on the day I was there, but an undergrad student was kind enough to take me around campus.

Kenyon is currently my #1, I would love to apply ED. But I also love URoch…

Anyways, I appreciate anything you guys have to say  I try not to do chance posts but inevitably, college admissions have taken over my life and I find myself here, at 2:00 AM… (hence a typo here and there)

First the good news. Your GPA is fantastic and being first gen will give you a boost. Now the bad news, your ACT score will be a deal breaker at Cornell and hurt you at the other three schools. Focus your efforts on getting a score in the 30s. Also, it looks like money will definitely be an issue for you. Would you be able to afford U of R, Case, or Kenyon if you got in? Not trying to be a downer, but that is something you need to think about now. Finally, why not consider Ohio State? Great school and affordable as an in state.

Be sure to check the net price calculator on each college’s web site.

For astronomy I’m surprised you haven’t looked into University of Toledo. They also have good auto merit aid.

For need based aid, apply to Ohio State. Remember to select “on campus” for living. Look into their regional campuses and select your alternate campus based on likely merit. Each campus has a pool of money for merit aid, some have automatic merit based on gpa, test scores or class rank.

^Remember Ohio State will be picking at least 2 students with need from your county for full rides.

"The Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship is awarded to two students from each of Ohio’s 88 counties. Those selected demonstrate both academic merit and financial need.

Award amount: Full cost of attendance.

How to apply for Land Grant
Ohio residents who apply to the university by February 1 and file the FAFSA by February 1 will automatically be considered." from http://undergrad.osu.edu/cost-and-aid/merit-based-scholarships
