Chances of getting into stanford?

I know there is not one magic score of getting into Stanford, but I just want to know your opinion on the situation. I am a junior in high school, I finished my first semester of already. I got all As except for two Bs. I got one solid B and one B minus which im not to proud of, but that was in AP U.S. History. I am taking AP U.S. History as stated before and im in Computer Science Data Structures this year which is AP credit, I did AP computer science last year, and took the next level this year, sadly there is no AB exam anymore but it is AP towards my GPA. I got a 4 on the AP cs exam as well. The rest of my classes are honors except for English and Math, but trying to get into Accelerated Pre-Calc next year. And will take an AP english course next year as well. Im in Chess club (just got back from state, we got 17th place in Illinois for my school) and im in the Robotics club at school. I volunteer a lot as well, and will be doing the National Honors Society. I have not taken the SAT yet but am thinking about taking it, as well as some SAT subject tests too. I took the ACT in December and received a 28 on it. I plane to get a 30 (or above) the next time I take it, in april. My GPA is a 3.8. And my dad went to stanford as well, I understand that being a legacy doesnt boost you up a lot if at all, but hey im thinking it has to help a tiny bit. To finish up I plan on pursuing computer science in college hense me taking computer science a lot (will take the final course senior year for computer science, love it so much!). I just like to know, what you do you are my chances. I wanna try and see if I can be accepted. Hey all you can do is try :) and that is what I will do! :)

Thank you for replying

GPA: 3.8
ACT: 28
SAT: have not taken yet
SAT sub.: have not taken yet
Grades: mostly As, one or two Bs, have never gotten a C

your ACT is very low for Stanford… like below 25th percentile. Plus CS is very competitive. Any major awards?

I dont have any other major awards. Hey ill apply and try when the time comes, I plan to retake the act hoping to achieve a 30 or 31. I know its low and I definitely see the real side of it all that my chances are little to none at all but again trying is all we can do, and thats what ive been doing my whole life, coming from someone who grew up and had a learning disability during elementary school, and middle school. I just thought id post to see what the outcome could bring. Thank you Thursday8, appreciate your output.

I agree that the ACT score is a bit low and might affect your chances, but SAT and SAT Subject Tests could bring up the possibility of acceptance. Most importantly, don’t lose hope and just keep trying your best! :)

Thanks whenpigsfly625, I wont loose hope and will always try my best. Im going to take the SAT in June about and havent set a date for the subject tests yet. Thanks again for your answer :)

Sorry about being so negative, I just didn’t want you to have really high expectations. I watched my brother apply to really good schools (including Stanford) and get rejected from most of them (including Stanford). I think it was very disappointing for him because he felt well qualified. But you seem pretty aware of the difficulty of admission and the likelihood of disappointment, and you are willing to try anyway. Kudos to you.

Def. DO NOT send that ACT score to Stanford, it might be their reason to reject you.

And DO NOT take the SAT unless you are scoring above a 2000 in your PTs, because that lower score might also hurt your chances of admission.

3.8 is pretty low for Stanford, I gotta admit, though it is by no means a bad GPA. And you will get a legacy boost. However even with that there is NO chance you will get in unless you score above a 2100.

Your EC’s are pretty weak, your SCHOOL got 17th place. That doesn’t say much for your school, even less for you individually. Robotics club, ok, mildly interesting, but so what? what have you done for them? Everyone is in the NHS…blah meh.

Are you a URM?

You didn’t mention having taken any SAT II’s. You’re a junior, running out of time. I would try to take ALL of the SAT II’s you possibly can (that you know you will score above a 650 in) ASAP. Especially any languages.

Another thing, if you are truly set on Stanford, ED. EDing helps a LOT, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Don’t worry about aid, you will still get need-based even if you ED, and with a Stanford degree you will be able to pay back any loans. (unless you fail out, lol)

Rooting for you kid, if you ED, with legacy, and SAT 2000+ you have a chance. With a 2200+ you have a very good chance.

Don’t send that ACT score.

Only URM status + Legacy + 2000+ SAT will give you a fighting chance.

@potataopancakes Stanford doesn’t have ED, only SCEA.

my bad, if it’s not binding, it’s not going to help you.

You’re gonna need that 2300.

You’re going to need a 2300 or a 34 in your ACT.

With that too, your chances are 20% with your ECs. Very very unlikely. Sorry
