Chances of getting into the University of British Columbia?

I live in Texas, so going to UBC would obviously be a big move. But it is one that I am willing to take. I want to live in Canada when I get older, so I figured why not go to college there? I am planning on majoring in Sociology. I have taken the SAT and the ACT and my scores are not very high. My GPA is a 3.4. However, I have volunteered almost 400 hours (I should hit 400 soon). I am also involved in theatre at my school and have dedicated about 400 hours to the program. I am also a part of my churchs youth team that teaches bible study to elementary schoolers. I also have a job. I have taken 3 AP classes/tests already and I plan on taking 3 more this upcoming school year. The rest of my core classes are all advanced. I am wondering if all of my extra curricular things will help out for when I am. And that they might be able to look past my low standardized test scores.

UBC will be stats driven, they won’t care about your ECs. Find Texas schools that fit your stats profile and budget as your degree won’t have any guarantee of ROI. Have you looked on UBCs website for minimum reqs? DO you know how much it would cost you?

Getting accepted to UBC might be close one way or the other, and might depend upon your SAT which you didn’t post. ECs are less important in Canada (and most of the world outside of North America) compared to the US, but I think that UBC will at least look at them.

One thing to consider: If you like UBC you might also want to consider U. of Victoria and Simon Fraser University. Both are very good, but are easier to get into than UBC, and are not so much noted for grade deflation. Also, for an American (assuming that you are not a Canadian citizen nor permanent resident) then they would both be much less expensive. There are a lot more very good universities in Canada (ask if you want more names), but these are three good ones to consider.

“I want to live in Canada when I get older”

Are you aware that if you get a 4 year degree from a Canadian university, then you are eligible to apply for a 3 year work permit?

I have looked at the minimum requirements and I have all of them. However, it does not say the required score for the SAT/ACT. I have also looked into the pricing and have done a lot of research in regards to how I will pay for it. I am open to other Canadian schools, but I was just wondering about UBC because I really like it. Also, I am planning on getting my bachelors in sociology and then going to law school to become a civil rights attorney.

Sorry, I forgot to tag yall. @DadTwoGirls @Sybylla

What is your ACT/SAT? Bank on 30 being a ballpark, but your GPA is going to hurt IMO. Again, you have no tangible financial plan and you imagine yourself in law school, such an undergrad needs to be close to free with optimum grades. What makes you think UBC would work for you?

For Arts, 3.4 can be acceptable, as long as you have 1300-1350+ SAT scores. Note that UBC weighs more on the personal profile for Arts.
For Science/Commerce/Applied Science, you generally need a 3.7-3.8. Note that if nobody else had applied to UBC before from your school, having an SAT score of 1460ish+ (or ACT 32+) may make UBC think that your school deflates grades a lot.

Note that there’s the less competitive UBC-Okanagan. Getting into Sciences at UBCO may be possible with a 3.4.

I am also applying to UBC from Texas. Depending on what type of curriculum you have at your school, you may be eligible to send additional documents that will boost your chances of being admitted.

( by the way UBC LOVES international applicants because it means more money for them, and schools in Canada are all public schools so you will be paying around the same amount that you would be if you attended UCLA, UNC Chapel Hill , etc.)

I hope you are still applying, don’t get discouraged

I know this is months later, but after reading all of the previous replies I was unfortunately discouraged… I applied to a Texas school instead, but I am planning on going to law school so I may have another shot there. Did you apply? And if so, how did it turn out for you? No one I knew applied to a school out of country, let alone UBC, so I think it’s cool that a fellow Texan applied/looked at UBC as well.
