What do you guys think my chances are?

I'm really looking at Vanderbilt. Also, I will have about 350-500 hours of community service with NHS, 100 with church

maybe improve the SAT scores
if you are hispanic, then you have a pretty decent chance at vanderbilt

Not hispanic :frowning:
Very, very, white.

But my essay will be about how I saved my mom’s life last year, that couldn’t hurt?

And I’m taking SAT/ACT again

But my essay will be about how I saved my mom’s life last year, that couldn’t hurt?

And this will NOT hurt… IF it is well written and how it impacted your life, etc. I’d like to hear your story…

You have a shot at Vandy however, you are somewhere in the “middle of the pack” at the present time stats-wise, particularly with your test scores. Hopefully you can bring up those SAT/ACT scores and improve your chances even more. Your essay has the potential of being a truly emotional and inspiring piece of work. Good luck.

Thanks. I’ll be sure to put extra effort into the essay. Also, my AP scores reflect that I can do college-level work quite well, even if I’m not doing so hot on the ACT/SAT. Will colleges look at this?

But the story as briefly as I can put it, was on a summer day between 10th and 11th grade, my dad had open heart surgery in March so he couldn’t tend to his garden as he normally would. My mom and I decided to help and she was in charge of tilling (gas tiller) the garden while I was cutting up bags of bark mulch. Unfortunately, she had it upside down so when cranked it, it came sputtering towards her. She screamed so I ran to her, and I saw what was going on. I got behind her and with all my strength pushed the (heavy) tiller up so that it would lose traction. I then put it on the side of the garden so damage would be minimal. She got a few cuts on her legs, but it could have been much worse.

Stanford- high reach
UPenn- high reach
UGA- good chance
Auburn- good chance
Georgia Tech- good chance
Vanderbilt***- low reach
UNC Chapel Hill- high match
NYU- high match/low reach
University of Southern California- high match/low reach
Cornell- high reach
Columbia- high reach

Thanks Analgin

There is a myth on CC that essays will get you in without the stats. Simply, they won’t. The admissions committees have heard it all. If your grades and scores are not in range for a school it’s highly unlikely you’d be admitted no matter whose life you saved.

I mean, I’ve heard that essays won’t make or break you, but it couldn’t hurt

jontheman1, thanks for re-telling that chilling story regarding your mom and the tiller. Wow, happy ending to that tale…

No problem jshain. Thoughts anyone else?
