Chances of getting into UC San Diego

It's the summer before my senior year...before college apps in the fall. I'm wondering what are my chances of being accepted into UC San Diego with a major that has to do with biology (which is currently an impacted major) or chemistry. I am planning to go on to medical school to become a doctor. What are some other universities that have reputable undergraduate pre-medical programs?

This was my first time taking the SAT; I winged it without any study time. I will be spending my entire summer studying for it and will be retaking it in Oct./Nov. I am aiming for the 2000s. I am also taking the APUSH, Biology M, and Math 2 SAT2 in the fall.

Please any ideas, suggestions, comments will help greatly :)

You’re weighted GPA is pretty good, but I would be worried about your unweighted GPA. I would also either A) retake the SAT to get into the 2000s or B) take the ACT and get into the 30s. Your Extracurriculars seem fine so I would say that you have a good chance of getting in! Chance back?

First of all:

If you get a really good GPA and do well on the MCAT, it really doesn’t matter that much where you do your UG. Go to a college people have heard of, do extremely well and you will be able to get into med school.

In terms of UC San Diego, your chances are pretty iffy. The caliber of students who attend UCSD for their pre-med and other science programs are top notch – think the kind of kind who probably turned down UCLA and Cal to go to UCSD instead. Every kid I knew from HS who went onto UCSD for science was a mega genius.

This all being said, you should still apply if you’re a CA resident. (You didn’t mention.) Your chances are better if you can guarantee a 2100+ SAT (not that hard to do), but it’s still a 50/50 thing. UCs are becoming a bit more selective for impacted majors because of the budget issues. A better SAT will detract from the so-so UW GPA. (UCs only look at UW.)

Your ECs are a bit generic and lackluster – but if you’re only applying to UCs, it won’t matter much because UCs are strictly based on numbers. ECs might make it harder for you to get into top tier private schools.

I think you should really consider UC Davis. It seems to be more of a match for you and their science programs are really top notch. Ditto for UC Santa Cruz – although they’re more into the life and environmental sciences. Still worth a try. With a raised SAT, you will probably get into at least one, if not both of those schools.

If you want to go out of state, I’d also look at the University of Washington and their pre-med programs.
