Well, I'm a bit worried about my GPA. I wasn't expecting to do so bad on my last semester score, so I'm trying to do my best now. I'm trying to get into any UC, but preferably
Davis because of its veterinary major. I know that the competition for that major is extremely high, so I'm okay with going to UCSC, UCI, and UCSB. The others I doubt I will get in, though.

AP class and score:
AP Biology(junior year): 2
AP Chem (taking it now)
AP Literature (taking it now)
AP Calculus (taking it now)

Two college level classes, passed with a B and currently taking one now (Both elective credits).

Well over 250 hours of community service.

I know that my chances are slim, but how slim? I'll go to a community college, and I'm fine with that, but the thing that discourages me from doing so is my parents, and I'm sure a lot of people are/were in the same situation. Please and thank you.

Honestly, I think your stats are not competitive enough to get you in. I’m sorry; I’m assuming that you are a senior this year? Are you in-state?

I’m trying to be realistic and honest and not trying to slam you. My dd is going to Davis this fall but her scores and grades were higher. Your incentive to take college level classes should help a little because they want to see what you are capable of doing.

If it’s to please your parents, you’ll need to show them stats online for average test scores, gpa’s, etc of admitted students. Do they know how much it will cost?

You could try Merced but you won’t be eligible for any merit aid and the cost is really high. I don’t think you’ll get into UCR

I agree with Aunt Bea. Sometimes it is difficult to hear, but you aren’t going to get in with that low of a GPA. I think if you have your heart set on Davis, attend other college and then transfer.

All is not lost if you can’t get into a UC out of high school. I know 3 friends’ kids who didn’t have the stats after HS and attended ccs. Two years later, they transferred to UCs as premed and engineering majors. They all said they worked closely with their cc advisors and stayed active on campus.
Good luck!

If you could raise your SAT to 1990+, you’d be guaranteed Merced/Riverside. Davis won’t happen, though. If you want to go there, go to a CC, work hard, and transfer.

Unless you have some sort of special circumstance. Is your school terrible? Do you have family problems? You might be able to get Santa Cruz. Again, not Davis.

Yes, I know I don’t have much to get into Davis. It’s fine with me. I’m okay with going to a community college, it’s more about how my parents will react. Any UC is good, but I’d prefer not to go to merced or riverside.

As far as how your parents will react, honesty is the best policy. If your plans are to attend a cc, check out the TAG program to see if it’s applicable.

Gather all of the info you need to get a good start and to show your parents you have a plan. If you want to go to grad school, this is a great way to go because you’ll save a great deal of money!

Yes, TAG is what I would plan to do. However, I live in san francisco and the community college here will possibly shut down within the next year or two. My parents know that I told them about my plans, but they’re somewhat disappointed because all my other relatives and sibling have gotten accepted into highly-regarded UC’s.

I feel for you because your parents are placing expectations on you that may or may not be accessible for you. Your stats are not competitive and your parents would be put into a situation of paying for admittance fees and waiting for a slim chance at Merced.

But, if you go to CC, you can focus and increase your chances of acceptance at Davis and save 2 years of high fees.

0 chance at Davis. My brother had a 3.8+ and a 29 act I think and was rejected from Davis. Ended up in ucsb.

What’s wrong with Riverside or Merced? They are still very good universities. Riverside is opening up a new med school and has a good business, engineering, and bio med program.

Your best bet is to get into Riverside which will still be a stretch or go the CC route.
