I got a 28 on my ACT; 32 on English, 25 on Math, 29 on Reading, 27 on Science, and an 8 on the Writing. I'm retaking it, though, because I know that I can improve my math. I mistakenly took AP Stats this year rather than Pre-Calc and Trig, so I'm suffering the consequences. Luckily it's easy stuff that I just have to re-learn. I'm not going to take the SAT, but I will be taking the SAT subject tests of Math Level 2, Biology, and Chemistry. I would love to get into either Chemical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering, or some type of Neuroscience major. I haven't yet made my decision, but I know the general area of where I'd like to go. I'm from Michigan and I'm in the top 15% of my class. I took AP US History my freshman year, AP Gov my Sophomore year, AP Comp, AP Stats, and AP World this year, and I'll be taking AP Bio, AP Calc, AP Chem(possibly), and AP Lit next year. My GPA is also around a 3.65 unweighted (mostly because of my freshman year and not taking a class too seriously). Next year I'll also be dual enrolled in Oakland Community College to take either Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 or Molecular Bio 1 and 2. I volunteer at an animal shelter and also at our local middle school with a sports program that they do there. I'm not on NHS because I just don't have the time to apply or do it. I figured if I already volunteer anyways, there's not much of a point to be in it, except for the fact that it looks good on a college application. I've been working for almost two years, also, so there goes my time for anything. I haven't been in any varsity sports due to conflicts with schedules of either my Mom's schooling or work, so unfortunately I can't stand out that way. I am in yearbook, however, and that's a leadership class. I may be made an editor, which furthers the leadership position.
I'm doing what I can to get out of Michigan and go to college so I can experience something new. I prefer California, Florida, or New York. I'm very intrigued by the University of California campuses, especially SB and LA. I want something either completely urban or relaxing and on the beach. I know that UC prioritizes its California applicants, but do you think I have a chance at making it? I've been doing a ton of research on UCSB and I'm sure that it has become my number one choice. Please give me any info on if you think I could make it, what you think I could do to increase my chances, or even tell me about UCSB. Thank you in advance!!(Also, if you could, maybe help me with picking an undergrad major? I'd like to apply to med school, and if med school doesn't work, maybe become a pharmacist or help develop technological innovations. I'm very interested in medical or environmental developments, though. I've heard mechanical engineering is great but I'm not too familiar with it, nor have I taken any type if physics class).

I also forgot to add that I’ve been in Spanish for 4 years, about to be 5 after next year.

Could you please calculate your UC GPA?
<a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

@CultClassic it says that my UC GPA is 4.17

Then I’d be inclined to say:
UCSB: Match
UCLA: High Match/Low Reach (your ACT is a bit on the lower side of average for them, and they get a lot of applicants each year)

Your post format is very hard to read. Your ACT score is within the mid50 for UCSB but rather low for UCLA.

I’m sorry, I’m posting it from my phone so I’m unsure how it’s turning out. Thank you, though! I’m glad to hear that I have a decent chance at getting into UCSB. Like I said, I’m going to retake the ACT to attempt to improve my math score and hopefully increase my composite score. Do you think I have a chance at getting into the Engineering major at UCSB? @CultClassic @billcsho

I have heard the ChemE at UCSB to be pretty good. In general, Engineering school is more competitive and you may need higher stat to get into. Are you in state?

Yeah, both should be a bit more competitive. Still, if you bring up that ACT, you should have a pretty great shot at UCSB. I also recommend taking the SAT subject tests if you want to get a bit of an edge.

UCLA engineering is probably a bit too competitive, unfortunately.

@CultClassic @billcsho I’m not in-state, unfortunately. I’m in Michigan. I’m also a minority(African-American and female), so that may help a tiny bit. I also have a feeling that my application essay will be incredible due to the fact that I’ll be writing about all of the hardships I’ve had to go through while growing up and the adversities that I had to overcome. I do plan on retaking my ACT to bring up my score a little bit if possible, and I’ll also be taking the SAT subject tests of Bio, Chem, & Math 2. I was considering UCLA for the urban environment, but I’m sure I’m more intrigued by UCSB.

Well, bring up that ACT a bit and do well on those subject tests and you should be perfectly fine for UCSB engineering! May have decent chances at LA, too, depending on how you do, though it’s pretty competitive.

Check with your family to see they can support you going oos. Your score and GPA are a little bit low for UMich in state but it is not impossible particularly for an AA girl applying to Engineering. You may want to consider going out state for grad school instead. If your family can afford the oos cost, they you may try UCSB.

Great, thank you guys! It means a lot! (:
