Chances of Getting into UF?????

Chances of getting into UF??
I just recently applied to Summer B at the University of FLorida and I'm wondering what my chances are. I am a senior at Suncoast Community High School (the 9th best HS in the nation) in the IB program with a 3.47 GPa and 4.32 HPA. My class rank is 121/365 top third (not bad at Suncoast) yet my SAT scores arent very good with my max being an 1860 with a 600 in math and 630s in reading and writing. I have a number of community service activities and have been working at Publix since the end of my sophomore year. I have coached special olympics (my essay topic) since junior year and have also coached rec basketball and founded and became president of a Race for the Cure CLub at my school. I'm afraid they won't look at it the same though because I started these activites junior year and they may think i'm padding my resume. I also was a JV school basketball player through Sophomore year (and was captain sophomore year) yet I stopped after stating in my resume that a knee injury kept me from playing junior year. I also played travel basketball through junior year.I'm also an NHS member and an AP Scholar with distinction

Hi, please check with your school’s GC to see what the history has been for being accepted to UF from your high school. Your ranking is a concern, as UF doesn’t like accepting more than 5 to 10% of a class. However, Suncoast is a great High School, so UF may go way over this %. Check with your GC to see what UF has done in the past.

If your weighted “UF” GPA is 4.32, then your GPA is fine, but your SAT is a bit low. It’s in the middle 50% of the class, but it’s about 100 points below the average. UF would be a high match, not taking into account your class ranking.

Good Luck!

Thank you but will they really look at class rank! i mean if I’m qualified I can’t help the fact that I go to school with a ton of guineses going to Harvard and Columbia.

(Cross post under the UF forum)

It’s not so much “class rank” as UF wants to select the best students from each High School (this is common for many selective colleges). Based on how competitive a High School is, would determine what % may get offers. UF may offer only to the top 5% at one school, while they offer up to the top 15-25+% at a highly competitive school like Suncoast.

Take a look at the common data set for Florida, at table C10:

http://www.ir.ufl.edu/data_OLD_CDS/cds2013-2014.pdf

Notice the following:

Percent in top tenth of high school graduating class-76.6%
Percent in top quarter of high school graduating class- 96.7%

So it’s rare for UF to offer to anyone outside of the top 25% of their class. It happens (and I’m sure it’s happen at Suncoast in the past), but it’s rare. Keep in mind recruited athletics also make up members of the pool of students that are NOT in the top 25% of their class.

Good Luck!

I’m right at the top third percentile, does that mean i have little chance?

As usual, I have no clue :)

Please contact your GC at Suncoast, they will be able to tell you, base on past history, if UF accepts the top 1/3. I would think they do. :)

Good Luck!

Bump bump bumppp

Quite honestly I speak from experience and the high school has little to do with the decision. The reason is you chose IB, my daughter chose IB mainly since we were new to Florida and worried about her education vs. our previous state. IB was a no brainer since we realized that the curriculum is standardized between all high schools making it a level playing field. Although UF was her last choice, she is now at UF Engineering. The IB senior class was 32 students/440 graduating, and most of the IB kids where in the top 10%. Note not many where accepted to UF.

UF: Reach

I hope you have a non-reach lined up…

Reach but if you get those SAT scores up may be a low reach/high match. Apply EA/ED for better chances  Good luck!

UF doesn’t do EA/ED. :(

My 4.32 gpa is not recalculated btw b bump need
